Waffen SS impression on a budget - AMMUNITION POUCHES |
|
|
|
Next up you'll need some ammunition pouches, there are several pouches that you could use depending upon the type of weapon you choose to buy. Most of us use either an AGM MP40 or a Tanaka K98 as seen in the photo illustration below, more on those later in our ww2 airsoft at German field equipment.
Very occaisionally you'll see someone with an MP44 or an MG42. However, we'll stick with the more common one's here, starting with a set of MP40 pouches as illustrated. These can come in a variety of colours, in this case green, but they are also available in tan or black leather.
Any number of retailers will stock these pouches, but a good reasonably priced scource is Knackmandel again a German reatailer who you can find on e-bay KNACKMANDEL Militaria where you can pick up a pair of these for around £30. These will give you six containers for your MP40 mags and a small pouch on the left of the left hand side pouch for a cleaning kit. Note that the pouches have two protruding “D”rings, these are for attaching to your “Y” straps or “Y Riemen”.

If you prefer a K98 loadout as a rifleman, then you need some K98 ammunition pouches. Originals are readily available from e-bay Germany, if you type in K98 into the search engine on e-bay Germany , a whole pile of them will usually pop up for around the £40 mark for a complete pair.
However, really good and reasonably priced K98 pouches are also available, the best place in terms of price is probably WW11Depot where you can find a good variety of fairly priced WW2 items. The K98 pouches illustrated cost around £21, again note the “D” ring on the back of the pouch for the attachment of the “Y” straps. These leather pouches tend to get misshapen if they get wet, they are small and not much use, except for carrying real 7.92 K98 Mauser ammunition, so the best thing to do with them is to fill them full of plastic bubble wrap this will help keep them in good shape and stop the leather from warping.
On a practical point, Tanaka K98 magazines won't fit K98 pouches - most people substitute G43 pouches instead.

Here's a close up of MP40 pouches, K98 and G33, only the end man is wearing a “Y” strap clipped to his ammo pouch “D” rings, a lot of late war photographs show soldiers without the “Y” straps.
These seemed to have been ditched and a lot of soldiers would tend to have their equipment on a “belt kit” only.
With your belt, buckle and pouches bought, that is all that you need for a very basic but authentic looking impression.
