I had exactly the same problem and I assume that they did as well as I found a few photos some time ago showing studs of 2nd pattern boots.
Managed to find one: look at the soles of the guy on the right

Thanks AGS for such a brilliant event. Some really intense action and great sportsmanship. The scene was amazing looking back over the fob in those initial attacks by the allies.....if you had a photo of that , you'd be hard pressed to know it was not a real battle. The medal was a really nice touch...
