Another MG34 in the making

Postby razorlight » Mon Aug 27, 2012 9:00 pm

After seeing Riflemans MG34 at Patton and reading his thread on making it ,I thought I'd have a go. I then had a good look at Tims version at the Corridor game. I'd never done anything like it before, or in fact, done any metal work so I was looking forward to the challenge.

After reading Tonys thread about 10 times I downloaded the blueprint plans from his link. They are excellent, I took them to work, blew them up to the correct size (1219mm I think) and sellotaped them together. The measurements from the plans have been copied exactly whenever possible. I bought 3mm wall tubing and 3mm box tubing because I thought it would be sturdier than the 2mm. I think I probably caused myself a lot more difficulty and work as it's harder to drill through and cut.

I bought a cyma AK47 gearbox, element AK hop, 650mm barrel, etc from RSOV. Really from then on in, it's been it's been trial and error, measure twice cut once. The pics show hopefully how it was done. Started at the front barrel section, barrel, receiver, upper receiver then stock. the grip and motor section are bolted in so they can be removed if necessary. The mag bracket was easier than I thought (thanks again Tony and Tim for the pics) The gearbox and hop seem to mate up fine. The 650mm barrel is fitted inside an ali inner barrel using cut out tap washer spacers.

It's about 3/4 done, got to do the magazine and feed and make the bipod, make and fit the bolt, finish the grips, final filler and sanding, finish painting it and fit the starter tab with used round. To be honest it has taken alot longer than I thought, probably because I've over engineered it. Whether it holds up to a good days battle is another question, but I'm quitely confident it will. I'll put some finished pics up when completed.

That looks superb!
I just don't know how people can keep so quite building such aweosmeness. Amazing progress you've made already.

Cheers guys. I've put up a few more construction pics that may help, if someone's thinking of doing the same. This is just how I did it, but there are, of course, much quicker and less complicated ways to do it. The only pic that probably needs any explanation is the front view of the flash hider showing the inner barrel inside. I made small cuts at the top of the inner barrel and flared them out slightly with a screwdriver. I did it to help secure the front barrel section once it was fitted to the outer barrel. The inner barrel then drops down through the length of the outer barrel, through a plate and finishes inside the receiver.

Re: Another MG34 in the making - Finished at last

Postby razorlight » Sun Nov 11, 2012 9:17 pm

I have finally finished my MG34. I put about 600 rounds through it today and it's working a treat. I did have a problem with it jamming after a few bursts. When I took it apart I could see the BB was turning up the lip of the hop bucking at the bottom. Thanks to Dadio's expert advice, I made a mod to the barrel by very carefully filing the barrel hop up clip notch back by 1.5mm. This allowed the barrel to sit further forward in the hop up unit so only a sliver was showing when you looked up the BB feed. Problem solved!

This gun has been built in the garage using only standard DIY/mechanics tools - Bosch drill, various hacksaws and all sizes of files. The only things I did by off ebay were a Wolf drill stand and a 13mm drill bit for doing the holes in the barrel. The rest of it was just a lot of measuring, cutting, drilling, bending, glueing and filling (Evostik Hard and Fast metal epoxy filler is superb stuff). The stock is made from 2 old pieces of floorboard, glued and clamped together, then rough cut to shape (from plan) and finished with a wood rasp drill bit, sanded and painted with a few coats of Wilkos walnut stain. The blueprint plans from Riflemans original thread are vital for an accurate looking gun.

I've throughly enjoyed doing it and after an obsessive 4 months I think time to do some stuff round the house before my missus shoots me with it. Here's some reference pics in case anyone else is thinking of making one.
