7.5cm le Geb IG18 project

Postby prideofengland » Tue Jul 01, 2014 2:29 pm

Well as some of you are aware I have been planning on building an airsoft 7.5cm le Geb IG18 mountain howitzer so I thought I would start a thread on its progress for those interested and also to spur me on to work more on the project as progress has been painfully slow so far.

Why a 7.5cm le Geb IG18?
1) Well I'm mad on anything Gebirgsjäger at the moment.
2) As a howitzer it will be able to fire like a mortar (TLSFX ammo).
3) The gunsheild will offer some protection to the crew.
4) The narrow wheel base will allow it to traverse wooded airsoft sites better than a full artillery piece.

What are the objectives?
1) To produce a reasonable fascimile of a 7.5cm le Geb IG18 for airsoft.
2) Able to be feild stripped for carting up mountains if the game scenario desires it. (Also to fit inside Grubers little van)
3) Able to fire TLSFX 2 stage pyro and crow scarers.
4) To have the ability to elevate the gun by a small wheel near the breach.

So what is it based on?

Ok so first up is the shotgun breach chamber and the recoil block. The shotgun breach is opened and closed by the lever in the picture. The pyro will be lit and dropped into a dummy shell that will act as the real breach, inserted and the breach closed. Hopefully upon opening a smoking shell will drop to the floor for added effect. The firing lever is of course just a dummy but serves to lock the breach when closed.

The recoil block is designed to function as it has a spring in it allowing backwards movement and hopefully returning to its original position although I doubt the Pyro will actually cause much of a kick.

Both sections are held together internally by D clips so can be separated for ease of movement/carrying.

Next up are the trail spokes and end spades. As can be seen in the pictures above these come in 2 sections to ease transportation up a mountain. I presume that if there is little room to deploy the gun just one section is used but I guess both would give more stability to the real thing.

I have the spades done but still working on the first trail. Hoping to get them both finished in the next couple of weeks.

So what next? Well I have ordered the wheels, these are being made for me as it was actually cheaper than buying a worm eaten barn find, but will have to wait a few weeks for delivery. Also the axle comes with them. So next up will be attaching the trail legs and making a trunion box to mount the gun itself.

Hopefully by that stage as it will then start to look like a gun I will be inspired to work a bit harder and get all the finishing parts/mechanism's sorted.

I have also managed to buy an original IG75 ammo tin, its got a lot of surface rust so will need restoring but all the clips/hinges seem to function. Dead pleased with this as it was as cheap as chips and they are rarer than rocking horse s**t.

Really great job Tim. If you need a crew or someone to carry a piece into battle, let me know.

Wheels arrived today :D , could not resist a quick mock up :ghey: pleasantly surprised with the compact size with the short version of the trail spikes.

Superb job Tim :good: between this and the Flak 38 the allies will be in for quite a headache :)

If you need it dragged up a mountain somewhere I'm happy to volunteer :D
