Sten MK V wood parts

Postby Iceman » Wed Apr 04, 2018 3:59 pm

Can anyone tell me what sort of wood the Sten MK V furniture is made out of? And to add to this how it was originally finished, oiled, varnished?

Hi apparently American walnut is traditional for gun stocks in the Uk and USA for centuries, but due to war time demand, the uk used beech wood also coloured with a linseed oil based stain and several coats of varnish.
In your country and Russia arctic birch was used as it is what was available in quantity.
Later in WW2 the Germans made k98 stocks from laminate as seasoned wood became in short supply.,i dont know if the Uk used any laminate in guns at all.
Any good stain will make it difficult to tell what wood type you have,so use Birch as i think it has a very plain staight grain similar to beech..

Personally I have made wood furnature for custom gun builds from oak ,although I don't recommend that at all as it is prone to splits forming, usualy it does not result in the part falling apart.
I then use stain from any hardware shop and then coat it in french polish and then bees wax, this seals out the moisture which is important.
I only used all the above materials because it was what i had on hand and did'nt have to buy anything.

You could try using Hornbeam, very much like beech, grows all across Europe. Used in furniture and more usefully for tool handles.

I’ve actually have the furniture already (pine), and now I’m looking to stain it to look like the real wood.

Colron American walnut wood stain is good for that. I've worked up some very pale woods to look like darker stocks. Just build it up in layers and finish with some linseed oil.
