Sten upgrade

Postby Lord Elpus » Mon Aug 06, 2018 5:52 am

Did a bit more to the Sten, I was going to make a wire stock or a channel type stock SOF military sell one, not cheap but a good product.
It doesn't take much to fit it to the AGM Sten. Then there's the battery placement problem. Searching through the internet gave me some clues, but eventually found a picture in a Jane's gun recognition guide ( that I must have had for 20 years!) that shows a wood infill to the stock, so making a slightly different version to hide the battery solves that problem, it also shows a wood cover piece with a folding front grip. I will have a go at copying this too.

Stripped down g/box today, typical AGM, a total $¥€%*~?= mess, strangely enough it ran quite well, but I've decided to do a quick spring change convert on this too. So while it's apart it will get all new guts.
Kingmaker wrote in one post it's a v7 gearbox, well he's not wrong, it's definitely a v7 casing (M14) but inside it has standard 18:1 (M4) gears the cylinder head is like nothing else I've come across, and that goes for the tappet bar too! So while everything else is pretty standard stuff the head and bar if broken, will be a pain to acquire I reckon.
Here's a photo of cyl head comparison.

The head on the left is a stock M4, the left one, Sten, nozzle tube set lower, head is longer, the tappet bar looks very similar to M14 type and a bit like a Thompson one (v6 box) but neither of them fit........I tried!

I have discovered that the M14 tappet bar will fit the sten......with a bit of very careful dremel work to make the nozzle fork/ connection fit. I will attempt this when I seize hold of a spare tappet bar.

A bit more done to the Sten, longer barrel, and made to look like a mk1, but I might change that later if I don't like the look, bit more to do to the stock, in the book, the pic shows a folding fore grip, looks like a bit of broom handle ( Brit engineering at its best!) will do much the same.
Fires real nice, a bit more range using .30's and have mastered the "single shot" trigger tap.

Wood stained and darkened, found some metal strap for front sight section, piece of axe handle for folding grip, and bits and pieces to make bracket.....nearly done.

I just had a look online to see what a Mk1 sten looks like. Very nice, looking good.

The mk1 had many various looks and styles as far as I've found on the internet, so my "near enough" effort, I think will be OK. It's finished........for now, might get a few changes, I'll use it first somewhere and see if I like it.
The barrel is slightly longer to accommodate the the inner barrel, and the front sight is just for show really, using original sights, but have made it integral with front sling hanger.

I think the drum model is a recent modification, I still think it's good though. Here's an original
