The thing to remember when putting your loadout together is that you are civilians and your resistance activities are SECRET.

With that in mind it's important that you don't arouse suspicion. You must look like other innocent, unarmed civilians (of which there may be a few wandering around).
Both the Germans and the Americans will be highly suspicious of anyone in paramilitary clothing openly carrying weapons. They will almost certainly either detain you or shoot you.

Expect to be questioned by both sides. The Americans may also ask for your ID papers (so make sure your orders are hidden). If you are carrying a bag they may ask to look inside. They are NOT allowed to frisk you or go through your pockets. A small pistol can easily be concealed but a rifle barrel sticking out of the bottom of your trouser leg isn't going to fool anyone.

Before each mission you may want to concoct a cover story. You may also want to hide weapons or explosives at various points in the field. If you do this you need to make sure that it's clear you've left the equipment intentionally or some other helpful player will assume it's been dropped by accident and pick it up for you.

Will we be able to fight openly with a given side if we convince them we're on their side? I'm just wondering if it is worthwhile bringing a longarm at all or best just to stick to pistols.

Yes, definitely.

I'd advise bringing both. Remember you can leave any excess equipment safely at our rally point, so you can make your weapons decisions once you get your secret orders.
