Sabre are selling post war Aussie BD for £30. Are these any better than 49 pattern brit stuff?

I think the cut is the same as 49 pattern.

The material is finer and less woolly and the colour is more green as opposed to brown.

Sinead and Paul were sporting Australian BD jackets at Ariel and I think for starter kit it looks fine.

So IYHO worth thirty beans or am I better off getting a 49 pattern set?

Post war Aussi, is the wrong cut and the wrong colour for a Brit loadout (fine colour for Aussi or Canadian, though!), where as '49patt brit is the wrong cut but the right colour and between at third to a sixth of that quoated price!

Yeah but try getting 49 pat in anything other than size 13 jackets and corresponding trousers for less than £20 a piece.

Hmm... sounds like something that will get worn once and then sit in a box in the attic for the next 10 years. I think I might just bite the bullet and get a Pegasus one. They seem to be the bid'ness.

They are indeed. There's a guy selling a set on the wwii re-enacting forums. May fit you... dunno. I was after it, but decided not to go for it in the end.

Yeah its always worth getting one decent set of BD. Mine cost me £80 second hand four years ago, its been worn to over 20 games and about 10 re-enactment weekends and still has no visible wear.

Mine was from warhorse originally i think although i recently bought an SOF blouse and its bloody good quality.

Still less than £30 and the right colour...

Surplus and Adventure in Kidderminster used to do various '49patt trousers for ~£15, FnG Supplies do BD jackets in a few sizes (most 13 - which is for up to 5'10"-6' so will fit most people as long as their trim enough <36 waist) for between £5-8 depending on condition. Militaria shows can provide whole '49patt BD for about £15 a set.

Then there's post-war Greek BD; right cut, but wrong greenier colour! But still very cheep (about the same as '49patt, if not slightly less)

So, to summerise:
Brit 49 = Wrong Cut, Right Colour.
Greek = Right Cut, Wrong Colour.
Aussi = Wrong Cut, Wrong Colour.

Are sabre doing BD (i.e jacket & trousers) for £30 or individual items.

The OP isnt too specific on that.

Either way it is bloody hard to get 49 pat in anything other than sprite sizes in most places.

Biggest jacket i've found to date has been a 13 and I've a pair of trousers for 34" waist and a long leg i've converted.

Otherwise sizing seems to be either child size or clown trousers.

Which shows have you found it for at £15 a set in reasonable sizes and if you see it again pick some up to sell on, you'll make a killing.

I'd definitely have another set at £15.

I'm sure the ozzie stuff we saw at Sabre had fully buttoning blouse fronts as thats really the main thing that lets 49 pattern down and is a pig to retailor.

Two size 13 blouses on Ebay right now.

How off is the colour of the Greek stuff? We've had numerous threads about the colour variations of khaki wool. Is it beyond the margin of error?

Would a 49 pattern cut look better if it were part of an open collar Rupert impression?

Yeah 49 pattern is reasonable if done as an officers blouse that's been tailored to be open (KRs allowed this for commissioned personnel and *very* late war ORs could get away with it for walking out - like April 45)

The easiest thing to do is turn it into an officers 40 pattern.

All you have to do is remove the breast pockets, iron them flat to remove the pleats. Cut them back to patch pocket size and sew them back on.

The fly is a little trickier but easy with a good sewing machine. You take off the back of the blouse fly, put holes in the serge to button straight thought and re-enforce the holes with a keyhole stitch.

took about an hour to do mine.

Here you go... must be about the eighth time this pics been posted.

Making it a 37 pattern retailored seems easier at first but you have to make new cuffs and pocket flaps which is actually loads more work than cutting bits off.

It does vary. I've got a nice matching set of BD top and trousers, which I use for whenever doing a Canadian loadout (complete with brill cap!). I've another Greek blouse which is somewhat darker green.

In my sig pic, I'm wearing Brit '49 greeny brown, and the person whose arm you can see to the left is wearing Greek. Doesn't look too bad under artificial lighting (as in the photo) but is more of a noticeable difference in colour in the daylight.

It's the typical 'Canadian' hat with ear flaps that many Canadian civilians of stereotypically wear, but an MoD version. Like a Russian urshanka, but not furry. Worn in place of a FS or GS cap in cold weather conditions. They were selling them at W&P for £25 upwards for used examples. Me, in my typical jammy way, found an unissed one in my huge head size in a "£1 for any hat" bin at Surplus & Adventure in Kidderminster (yes, that place again...).

The flaps tie up at the top with the bow-tapes when the flaps aren't needed in the 'down' position.

I've also got a canadian 'cold weather' cap, which is basically a baseball cap, but in BD serge fabric, again, picked up for a quid or so.

Nick has just told me he doesn't have any of the Aussie BD left anyway so it's become a moot point. Either that or he just wants to get back to the pub and can't be arsed to look through the pile sorting out a size 13 for me.

If it's size 13 you want, and will fit (I wear a size 13, BTW, and we're about the same height when I met you at Op Epsom), then deffo go for '49patt, for a cheap BD blouse. It's the most commly avaliable size. Then save up and buy a decent repro' when you can afford it.

What about 49 pattern trousers? Are they also annoyingly different to 37 / 40 pattern?
