Hello all, there is a lot of hearsay around blacked '37 patt webbing. Some accredit it to the Commandos, some to armoured units, some even claim it is SAS.
The only reference I have found is a pic of a Captain, 3rd Kings own Hussars in Africa. Being an armoured unit this fits with part of the suggested accreditation for black webbing.
Allegedly post-WWII the SAS used black webbing in Oman.
I'd be curious if anyone has any proper evidence of blacked up webbing being used by a combat unit. Primary sources and photographs would be particularly awesome.
P.S.: The reason for asking is that I bought a 37 web belt in black recently and am going to be putting together a black kit for regular game days and would ideally like an outfit to go with it!

Post-war armoured corps, mainly. Started off 'blancoing' it with stove blacking.

Post War royal marine commandos. Can be seen in use in the sixties/seventies on the photographs I remember of an abseiling exercise.
Cheers fellas, got some good reference images now!
