I'm just about to get some 37 for a spec ops load out... What are the acceptable colours for this as I've seen pics of commando types with blacked up sets (presumably boot polish and blanco).

Any comments or thoughts?

Blanco it green

99.9 per cent of units in NWE did this and it means you can use it for other stuff too.

the sas used either raw unblancoed, green blancoed or scrubbed lighter webbing.

I've yet to see a pic of black webbing in use pre 1956, could you scan a pic?

I'd go with Gadge's advice, blacking it up is a bit pointless, really, as it'll ruin it for any other use you might want it for.

The only reference I saw to commandos colouring webbing was in regard to the St Nazaire raid ( a great game idea if we could find a port and a lot of MTB's!) and the protection teams blancoed their webbing white to be more visible and recognisible to each other in the blacked out streets.

Trust me, I've just gained some blacked webbing and it's a b*gg*r to get back to "normal". At least green blanco is partially reversible and usable on multiple platforms.

RTR Blackened their webbing, A veteran gave me his old '37 belt, and beret along with a few other bits befour he died a few years ago, and he was a "Hostilities Only" he didnt say wether it was it was official or not though.

that would make sense as they did like (and still do) their black overalls. Remember too that they're usually inside an oily smelly beast (aka tank) so the blackening would hide any oil stains on the webbing that would show up if it was standard green, however as none of us are doing RTR then I guess we stick with green? Jez and self will be having a painting session before the 16th Dec bash (B&Q do those matchpot jobs with a mixer machine so you can get exactly the colour you want -just wondered what paint to go for-matt emulsion?)

Argh... no use blanco! :)

You're not going to get the right look with paint and you will RUIN your webbing using emulsion.

Have a chat with Warren at S&S, he may have some available...

Yith I was only thinking of the hassle of reapplying the stuff...but then me and Jez are stitch nazis when it comes to Medieval so I suppose we'll end up blancoing after all......

Blackened '37 webbing was used by SAS primarily post-war - by 21 Reg for 'Dress' occassions and there were examples of '37 webbing being blackened for night raids in Oman. There were odd examples of it being used by SAS during WW2 but this was rare.

As has been said previously, if you have just the one set, either leave it raw or blanco it green, as this will give you the most options.
I have a spare set of blackened '37 webbing (belt, pouches, straps and bottle/carrier), which I don't mind parting with for the postage and a small number of beer tokens, if you really want to have a 'black option' ....
