British Airborne Infantry whether parachute or glider borne wear the Denison smock from end of 1942 onwards. The leather jerkin was intended to wear for during heavy work and was used as a greatcoat replacement at times. It is not used in the field by airborne units. It is seen in use by other British units in the front line particularly in the winter of 1944 in NW Europe.

i've seen 6th airborne wearing them in the winter of 44. They were in the line as regular infantry, i can only presume it was issued as a short term greatcoat replacement as that winter was appallingly cold.
But you're right they were not issued for airborne operations.
