Hi,

I am thinking about starting a Chindit impression (2nd operation).
From what i have read Indian JG Battle Dress Trousers + Indian wool shirt or + Indian JG Battle Dress Jacket would be the correct uniform.
It seems the Indian shirt is not available as a reproduction. How about the BD? WPG wrong pattern? Does that leave Replicators as
the only option?

Thanks! :)

Hi

Come and have a look at us at The Far Setting Sun [link]http://www.farsettingsun.co.uk[/link].
If you are serious about getting Chindit or Far East Kit it can be a fascinating campaign to research but hard work. It is not easy to get correct items. You have identified one of the major problems that WPG currently do not make the correct pattern of JG uniforms for Chindits. Though the JG BD jacket can be used.
We have used Replicators for JG trousers and Shirts and with some issues we have been able to get some good product from them.
For our Essex Regiment impression the India wool shirt is a key item. It is seen in many of the photographs and films of the time. Some of our members have originals and in fact I have one that is too small for me. We have been investigating reproductions but have not found a good result for quality and cost yet.
There are many other details and items that make researching kit for the Chindits an interesting experience.
That is before we even start on Mules, Horses and dogs.

Thanks for all the info!
I have visited the "The Far Setting Sun" site when i started researching Chindits :good:

So currently the only option for me would be the Replicators JG BD Trousers + Jacket. WPG Jackes are only available in big sizes at the moment.
Or i try to get a mule costume and you can paint me green 8)

Being difficult to research makes it even more interesting (OK and sometimes frustrating), I am kind of used to this from my IJA research. So many new things to discover!

Yes Replicators may be your only option currently. I can ask the group if we are ordering from them as maybe you could add to an order. Whereabouts are you?

Thank you very much for the kind offer but I'm not from the UK. So I guess joining your group order does not make much sense :(

Hello Yith, I'm in Germany and there is not a single Chindit in sight over here! :(
I will probably start working on my impression in the weeks and months to come anyways. :good:

Its a south east asian water carrier/bladder. It's slighlty porous and the outside stays wet which cools the contents by evaporation

Nice... !

What type is the water bottle cover and is that a proper Dah I can see in the scabbard? The handle looks quite different from the ones I've seen before.

Skeletal type carrier.
It is a Dah sheath but I do not have a Dah yet, it's some kind of 45 dated machete. 8)

Aha. I did wonder as regards the dah/machete.

As for the water bottle carrier. I can see it's skeletal, but it's clearly not the normal type with poppers at the top as I'd see those in the photo.

Does it have poppers on the side or a buckle?

Ah OK, it is the type with the popper on front instead of the top.

In that case, if it's original, it sounds like a very early version and I'm rather jealous!

Does it have any markings?

Oh really? Never gave it much thought. I have several water bottles and simply took the first one I could find for the pic.
It is original. Marking are faint I think i can make out a 1942

Do you have the book "Equipment of the WWII Tommy"? This type of carrier is pictured on page 4.

Interesting, I didn't know they were made as late as 1942. I had only really heard of them in relationship to getting the correct uniform for Dunkirk.

I've made myself a side fastening one by moving the strap on a top fastening one for my Dunkirk webbing set.
