Fixing water bottles?

there's a simple fix , get a large plastic sandwich bag feed it into the bottle fill the bag inside the bottle with water ,double the bag back around the neck of the bottle and secure with an elastic band and cut away the excess ,cork in the usual way .it has the advantage of being able to use a fresh bag when ever you use it .or you can hunt around to find one in good condition one but they are getting scarce.

Option 2 is to have the water bottle for show and keep a bottle in one of your pouches. TBH it'll be easier to get at and you will otherwise just fill the pouches with stuff you don't really need.

Could you pour a small amount of paint into it and swirl around? You would need to leave it a long time to dry and rinse it out several times before using but most paints should be safe. I'm thinking of something like rustoleum as thats used on BBQ's so should be relatively non toxic and capable of sorting rust out.

Not sure if that is a good idea. If the rust caused any paint to flake you could end up swallowing paint flakes and just because a paint is labelled "non toxic" I am not sure it means it is "food safe". There might be some coatings which are food safe, I have not found them yet, so check with the manufacturer before you use them.

Some people have suggested putting some uncooked rice with water in the bottle and shaking it throughly to scape of any loose rust particles until then just use the bottle as normal, I did that to my brit waterbottle years ago and have used it ever since.

Edit - or just stick a plastic bag in it.

I was at one time tempted by the idea of pouring resin in of the type used for fiberglass (obviously not the fiberglass matting as well),then turning the bottle until the complete inside was coated ,that stuff is non toxic once set but it seemed pointless once i thought of the plastic bag method .
The complete reversal is to fill the water bottle with BB's and keep a modern water bottle in one of the front pouches as suggested above.

My main British waterbottle is one I've been using since the early 1970s (none of your fancy Sigg aluminium hiking water bottles available then!). And yes, bits of it are a bit rusty, as is the chipped bit on my enamel baking tray of similar vintage. The worst bit is the bolt on the cork, even though I regularly clean it.

I'd rather drink/eat a bit of rust than muck about trying to put paint and/or resin into something I'm going to drink out of though.

As above, if you are really worried, line it with a plastic bag.

It is a good idea to sterilise water bottles periodically though, whatever they are made of, as all sorts of nasties can grow from mouth washback sloshing around in lukewarm water all day.

Due to the difficulty of unstrapping and re-strapping the bottle during an event, I do exactly this. I personally find it very easy to dehydrate in an all-day event, and having a water bottle that is difficult to get to only exacerbates the situation.

It is best to just replace the Bottle if you want to use it to drink from, as soon as a British 08 pattern Water bottle is damaged it will let you down when you really don't want it to.

I'll give the plastic bag option a try for now (next game being Saturday and all), and have think about other options. I may just sneak a water bottle into one of my pouches just in case it tuns that I can't get the thing out of the webbing :p

For now, I'd suggest just putting a modern bottle in your small pouch. Don't dehydrate for the sake of uber-accuracy.

Yes, I would take a bottle or three of extra water. Looks like it is going to be hot tomorrow.

It was hot! I had a fair bit of water and drank most of it!

I started the day with a hangover and had 1 water bottle. Watermelon saved my life at the end of the day

i think i drank near 3 liters through the day and would still have liked more but i was lucky enough to go back to the car at lunch .

I wore a sun hat and the Aussie jacket is a bit thinner than battledress. A 2nd water bottle is however on my list of stuff to get

The hat is only £25, its the P&P that costs but the hat and jacket came to about £100 including P&P. Lots of unusual gear on that ebay shop, well worth a look. I think I went there to look at Denison smocks, turns out they are quite cheap there but I never got around to getting one because I saw the Aussie gear

...but they're really not the right colour and bizarrely the round air-holes in the armpits are key-hole button-holes - perhaps they don't have the industrial sewing machines that can do just circles? For ~£25 more you can by one from SoF which are top-notch compared to most other repros'. To make them perfect, change the light-green utility buttons on the epaulettes to dark brown ones
