After pondering over the questions of gas masks, I've decided to ask for everyone else's thoughts on the matter.

I've considered getting myself a gas mask, preferably the earlier Mk.V General Service Respirator. However, my concerns go straight to the problems of the material perishing and that the filter boxes contain lovely asbestos to breathe in. So I'm wondering whether there are any vendors out there that make replica masks that anyone is aware of (Since my searches have turned up nothing so far)?

Next my thoughts went to whether I could actually use the gas mask as a face mask by replacing the lenses with something that could withstand BB shots. Has anyone ever considered this, if so what are your thoughts on this matter?

Thank you for reading, ladies and gentlemen.

Seeing as you're in Donny, on Wednesday's 10am-1pm there used to be a guy on the market who sells Militaria, mostly WW2 and Modern British gear. I bought WW2 dated gasmask for £20 with bag and filter. I remember he had a few Mkv's and two German ones but they may have gone by now.

Spoiler

The filter was Danish and 53 dated so I'm not sure if it was asbestos but I never put the gasmask with filter on just to be safe. I thought about replacing the lens but after much looking it seemed it may become a bit too hot and sweaty with it on so it's just sitting there on top of my wardrobe.

A lot of the players who do Joshs cold war games have replaced their respirator lenses with BB proof plastic, and I've seen a couple of ww2 players with the same.

Evidently motor cycle visors are the thing to use, but shoot them a lot from close range to be sure.

Cheers

indeed the old couple who run the stall on doncaster market do have early and late war respirators and their bags.

Heroshark could easily replace the lenses with bb proof mesh which would have an added bonus of making the mask comfier to wear long term

Mesh is a good idea, the reason I haven't taken mine out is that I'm afraid to break it as I'm not sure how to actually take them out.

A gas mask will get rather warm and trap a lot of moisture, the filter will make it harder to breathe. One idea would be to remove the contents of the filter (bear in mind some contain asbestos) and insert a powerful fan in the casing.

This is what deters me the most and is why I'd prefer a replica... Since then I won't be at risk of dying 40 years later. I'd prefer to live longer than that to keep playing airsoft.

Original mask and mock up a fake filter maybe?

I have seen replica filters for gas masks for sale but for the life of me I can't remember where.

Are the WW2 mask's got the same threading as the new ones? If so you could put a newer filter on, or gut a newer filter.

Saw this http://www.gisurplus.co.uk/shop/product ... -gas-masks when trying to find out. Fitted with new german filter seems to indicate that a modern filter fits. Shame this is a wholesaler with £150 minimum order.
