I'm in need of much help and advice, for the first time I'm considering a Brit loadout. I know nothing about the right look but have brought enough wrong Axis kit to know it's better to ask first buy later! I'm from Sussex so was thinking about going for a Royal Sussex Regiment look. I've done some google and wiki searching and they appear to have covered a large period of the war. If that's a viable option could you please advise me of what kit I should be looking at getting. Working on a No4 project as the primary weapon.

I'm guessing you want an ETO impression Jimbo?

The basis for all brit loadouts is WWII era woollen battledress (either '37 or '40 pattern) and '37 pattern webbing. The webbing is easy to find and cheap. As for battledress you can either pay a lot for a reenactor quality repro or a little for surplus Brit '49 pattern / Canadian / Greek / Aussie - all of which are "wrong" in various and subtle ways. Lots of threads about this in the British section.

Once you've got that sorted you can spend a month researching the correct regimental, divisional, corps and arm-of-service patches that go with your chosen battalion before moving on to the correct soft headwear (GS cap / FS cap / berets of various colours with or without bits on them, etc.) :D

It's a lorra lorra fun.

The best thing to do is try and be fairly generic to start with and then specialise as necessary. Remember a lot of events specify exactly which unit you should do so being generic is good.

The basic Brit generic impression is:
37 pattern webbing (blancoed KG3)
ammo boots
37 pattern BD ("Battledress Serge" is even better, but far more expensive)
MkII Tommy helmet.

No insignia at all on that... then add stuff on as you see fit to make it specific to your chosen unit(s).

Personally I have insignia to cover a large range of units and rank. I change it as needed for the event. Same with headgear and other uniform items.

Anyway... this is all taking over the thread so I'm going to split it off...
