I'd really like to be able to use my gasmask resi bag for storage, but it's so flappy and floppy that it can't safely hold anything. There seems to be a design flaw in the lid area, whereby the top of the lid has corners, but the side part of the lid is just one straight piece attached, without any thought that it should be a 3-D structure, if you get my meaning.
Anyone else have similar problems? Any suggested solutions ?

I'm not sure its a design flaw as it safely hold a gas mask, so fit for purpose! But yes, as a more practical pouch what I have done is make rigid box of four sides and the base with 3mm foamex that fits inside. The rigid sides hold the lid taut and so large or soft things stay inside, although small slim things might still work their way out - a loose penknife for instance (except that as we learned yesterday such items should be attached buy cords so they can't be lost - but meh, it was only a for instance!). Now, the snag with this is that if you wear it horizontally, clipped to your belt, it is very painful if you forget and sit against something or slip on your back. Much better to wear it upright on it strap, either wrapped round the belt and hanging or slung from the shoulder towards the back where it is a bit more free to move (and get to).
Thanks. However, I found out yesterday, that whilst crawling through several kilometres of brambles (well, it felt like it!), stuff worn over the shoulder on a strap, like my water bottle, is a complete pain. (Of course, you wouldn't know that David, since you were wondering around whistling Lili Marlene at the time! )

Did you see Pete's? Worn on the back of the belt, strap wrapped round the belt.
I didn't - good shout. So was it upright, or sideways ? (Struggling to envisage it...)

Must have been upright, hanging from the strap which was wrapped round his US pistol belt. Works on a '37 belt of course where you could also wear it clipped in horizontally and dispense with the strap at the risk of small objects slipping out - which is why food/water/cap/gloves/BBs etc work best in ressi bags without stiffening and at any angle.
My resi bag is actually on a 37 belt. I cut the shoulder strap in half and then put the two straps through the rear buckles on the belt, allowing it to hang in the low slung postition (then the bergen doesn't sit on top of it and push the whole belt kit down). To stop stuff falling out and rattling, I shove a wooly hat, or a sandbag on top of all of the kit inside.
When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
