I didn't do any of this just bought a swiss helmet for £12 .
These are very cheap as they look a bit funny in stock form but they come in a slightly textured green finish and already have two mounts for the strap.
They also have a very comfy good quality liner but the strap only goes under the chin so I will still need to make a chin piece.
I cut the sides off with a grinder ,took around 15 min and I think it will look just right when it has a net on it .

Just thought I should post this here as it looks like you lot have been putting far too much time into it.

I was considering the RAC route but I already had this so I thought I would go for it .

Hope this post doesn't annoy but it was very easy and still has the original helmet strap mounts so very strong without drilling or sticking etc.

I have been looking into Swiss helmets as cheaper alternatives to Brit Para helmets. The M48 would be ideal (nearly identical) where as the M71 needs the flared sides cutting off: http://www.gostak.demon.co.uk/helmets/switzerland.htm

Good luck to all of you making an AB helm from DR or RAC helms....a lot of work involved. Money is tight for me at the moment and I did consider converting a DR...but Im going to get one from Pegasus or MPPs. Until then Im going to do what most Paras did as soon as they hit the deck.....ditch the helm and on with the maroon beret!!!

In "Theirs is the Glory", I counted about five paras wearing berets in combat. The rest were wearing helmets.

I know it's just a film, but they did use ex-soldiers and actual veterans of the battle.

although I have a beret, I will wear the lid in-game as maroon beret does tend to atract a lot of head shots! (some thing I'm quite used to when I marshall, but if given the option to avoid a face full of ammo, I'll take the lid!)

Ah but then watch A Bridge Too Far!!! As an ex squaddie I know that I would have prefered to fight without a bloody heavy uncomfortable helmet on and wear a beret even if it was a bright maroon colour. They were extremely proud of the 'red' beret....hard fought for!! Ive read lots of first hand accounts of them chucking the helmets as soon as they could. They were known as the Red Devils for a reason!!!! :D

Nice work froggy.

RE berets.

It was pretty common to wear the face veil/scrim as a bandanna over the beret to dull the colour. You can see this in period photos and by vets replaying their part in
'theirs is the glory' (the definitive UK airborne reference to be honest)

YOu obviously dont see it in staged shots.

What most people forget is that the 'scrim scarf' was actually supposed to be worn over the head and shoulders to break up outlines and camouflage the head and face.

I dunno....if it stays at £40 I think thats reasonable for a modified DR helmet. He certainly hasnt got his facts right re leather and canvas straps tho and he hasnt made it clear its a DR helmet until the question was asked..but on the otherhand he didnt need to post the question up.....so in my mind...hes honest if a little off with his history..we cant all be perfect!!! :D

Would he have edited the description if not asked though???????

I suppose £40 is ok seeing as another plain untouched RAC helmet sold yesterday for £30

Ebay i fail to understand where realy good stuff goes for peanuts and a £10-£15 helmet goes for twice its value :) :) :) :) :)
