Whats the best way to clean wool serge of heavy soiling or fruit/berry staining? Dry clean? Cold hand wash?

does anyone know where you can get a ww2 groundsheet cape? i am not paying silly prices so would a post war one be acceptable? also whats the deal with the usage of these as shelters? i can remember we had a few post war ones at my old cadet hut and they werent that big!
We picked up a couple of the rubberised cape type things at Beltring for £4 each.
They're good as a rain cape but would be useless as a shelter.

Cool hand wash for berry staining... get that a lot at F&O.
After the wash stretch the BDs a bit to stop them shrinking. Just pull them by hand in all directions to line up the fibres...
Dirt can be brushed out
Dry Clean is also okay.

i don't think it's ever possible to have too much kit.
Well, maybe if your house starts to look like Sabre Sales, but until it gets to that stage, then you're fine! ![]()

Well, I wore my Brit Airbourne kit for the first time today, at an open day. Heh, met Tyler-D and friend, quite by chance!
Anyway, I decided to wear my small pack on the side, and dead handy it was too for grenades and smokes, etc. However, my problem was that it meant I had to move my water bottle over to the left side, and it kept getting tangled up with my gas mask pouch thing. What do you experts do? ![]()

The waterbottle in it's carrier is 'usually' always on the right hand side hanging between the front right and back right brace straps handing down. The small pack, when worn 'off-the-belt' mirrors the water bottle and carrier, but on the left hand side using the front left and rear left brace straps that hang down. If you're talking about the 'light' gas mask pouch ("dragon bag"/ light green canvas material gas mask pouch) then that would be worn over your shoulder on it's strap but with the strap done up so that it lies approximately level with your belt (to stop it getting caught in things) or more commonly attached to the back of the belt (direct centre back - between/on top of the rear brace strap buckles) with it's long shoulder strap either stuffed inside or wrapped around it's exterior.

Ah, ok. I wore my small pack on the left, as in photos I'd seen. I'll try it the other way around. Cheers. ![]()

No, that's correct! Small pack on left, water bottle on right.

Er... yeah, but then my problem remains - the cork of the water bottle snags against the gas mask pouch and pulls out!

So how are you wearing your gas mask pouch?
Try as I mentioned in my original post and have either with the shoulder straps shortened or affixed to the rear of your belt.
If you've got the large MkIV gas mask bag, and not the later 'lightweight' design, then it should be hanging down your front, suspended from your neck and secured around your waist with a piece of string.

Dunno what type it is - green canvas, which I attached to the belt, because that's the only attachments it had, and it's what a guide said. (Not a girl guide.)
