Looks like the cheap Indian reproduction rifle slips have finally got the cleaning tin pouch poucket corrected! The opening and flap style is now as like on originals!

Strap? :slap: Why didn't the war department think of that?

I am going to hazard a guess that they originally copied a current issue Indian or Pakistani army one and that at some point since 1947 they had changed the orientation of the pocket. And added a strap.

What's wrong with the strap, Raj? Originals had a strap.
I've got two war-dated ones; ones still got it's strap and the other is missing it but the webbing is clearly marked where it's been torn off in the two mounting places. Have you an original with no shoulder strap?

I've seen a couple with two brass loops in place for the rifle sling to go through and be used as a strap, I saw Ranj's at the Crete game and I'm pretty sure it was of this type.

Out of curiosity how much do originals tend to go for?

Anywhere between £5 and £40 depending on condition.

Thanks, I'm guessing militaria shows are best for this sort of thing?

 Well strike a light!

I have indeed, 1942 dated with no sign to suggest that there was ever a strap or loops on it. I must admit I just assumed that they came like that because they would be on unit transport or in storage while in a cover. If you were carrying it you might have a breech cover. When I have needed to carry it I improvised with a shoulder strap utility straps and / or utility straps.

One thing to keep in mind when buying from India is that you are liable to get hit with tax and handling fees, I bought a sten bandoleer which ended up costing me a fair bit more than if I'd got it from Shoot N Scoot.

I saw another webbing rifle slip at Stoneleigh, exactly the same pattern, except that the shoulder strap was held onto the body of the slip, along one of its long sewn edges, via brass D-rings secured in leather tabs which sides were sewn either side of the edge. i took a good look at it and all stitching appeared original - I'll try to draw out what I saw as I was a fool and did not take any pictures of it :slap:
