was re-blancoing my kit today and noticed the handle of my trenching tool was looking rather sorry for itself so i thougth rub it down re-stain and out with the linseed oil.it was as i was in the process of said work when i noticed that on the opposite end to where the blade is fitted there is this odd fitting and i was wondering if anybody knew what it was for.

Its to attach a no4 bayonet to.

Allegedly for mine probing.

It does mark the helve out as being late to post war (late as in around 1943 onwards) IIRC.

Bit of a discusssion as to whether they saw much service and as to the exact date they became common issue.
