I've managed to find a '39 patt but it has quite a bit of moth damage and I was wondering what I should pay for it, damage taken into consideration? The seller wants £55 for it.
I paid 50 quid for mine (including postage, along with some other stuff), and it has a few moth holes too. I've no idea what the originals generally go for, largely it is down to what you are willing to pay for it. Yours looks in worse nick than mine so why not offer him 40?
Cheers

Well I did just see an original in pretty pristine condition go for £42 on eBay, put a couple of bids on that but no such luck. My issue with this one is simply the extent of the moth damage and whether it could be made worse by me wearing it under webbing?
[EDIT] I'm also worried that there could still be moth larvae or eggs in the coat, just waiting to continue feasting!
I've no idea if webbing would make the moth damage worse, these things are over 70 years old and seem to be as tough as old boots.
I can't ever recall an occasion when I've worn webbing over my geatcoat, it really is too thick and heavy to play airsoft in. I just wrap up in the evenings in it, although it also makes handy Bren gun bag
I've played in a German greatcoat (well 1942 dated Swedish), but it seems a fair bit thinner than the British one.

If you're worried about moth larvae still in the material, bag the coat up in a bin bag and whack it in the freezer overnight. Anything left alive after that would be some sort of moth terminator that could possibly kill you, so I'd recommend burning the coat for your own safety!
Webbing wouldn't really bother the material unless there's already a rip or hole for it to get caught on and made worse. Like Martin says, they were built to last.
Lastly, wearing webbing over it is a bad idea simply because you're more than likely to disintegrate with heat stroke than anything else.

I've decided to give it a miss and keep my eye out for one in better condition. At the end of the day if I don't have any luck I could always see if the seller still has it.
Seems a bit steep anyway for something so devoured.

Yeah that was exactly my thinking, I was going to barter anyway but I don't think he'd have gone low enough to make it worth getting.
You are better off going to a show of some kind with lots of traders, you are more likely to find something better at a good price.
Yes that is my next move, there's one in Bromley in April I believe (missed the one last Sunday) so I shall peruse the stalls there but I'm hoping to get to one of the big ones, in the summer perhaps.
Most of the stuff at any militaria fair in Bromley is probably still on active service up East Street on a Friday night!

Unfortunately Stoneleigh has just come and gone but, if you can get there, Malvern Militaria Fair is in 4 weeks.

Is war and peace any good? I was thinking of that one more but I'll definitely look into Malvern.
Cheers.
