sorry if this has been addressed before but, will tanaka k98 mags fit into fj k98 bandoleers? or should i just use fg42 ones?

Yes they will fit, if its a good one. The pockets on the cheaper versions are often modeled on 7.62x52 rounds rather than proper German 7.92x57 so are noticeably smaller. The better quality versions such as SM wholesale or Panther Store have the correct size pockets that do fit Tanaka mags, although its a little snug.

I just cut the internal stitching separating the internal pockets, so
That two pockets become one. I don't think it spoils the look
At all and I can get two vsr Mags in each pocket, although given the tanaka mags are slightly deeper (roughly same length)

Yes thats the best solution for one of the chinese or sturm bandoliers or if you're using VSR mags. Its what I did with mine before I got my SMW one. Only one mag fits per 4 pockets (if you count the rear ones as well)but you can still carry up to 6.
The light weight of VSR mags compared to Tanaka mags makes them more comfortable to carry in pockets and the 2.5x ammo capacity means you don't need nearly as many, the bandolier is just for show for me then.
