Looking to put a FJ impression together, as ever, on a budget.

Have been looking at these -

Dutch Army Coveralls, around £15.00 posted

-- attachment is not available --

I'm thinking cut off the legs and hem accordingly, and they would work as a nicely worn-in step-in smock. Could use the spare leg material to add fake pocket flaps if necessary, and maybe make an olive helmet cover ............ what do the panel think ?

Epic smock for compassion, £65.00+postage --- attachment is not available --

With a bit of handy work that might actually do the job :) Just be sure to buy it way oversized.

Yes, it is an interesting idea. It partly depends on how much you value your time, if it is more than £50 worth of work to do the conversion, it probably isn't worth it.

Having said that, I seem to do quite a lot of hugely time consuming 'sewing' projects, and I don't care about the time involved as it is relaxing and enjoyable.

Cheers
Martin

New Kriegsmarine impression ......... ? :D

-- attachment is not available --

Anyway ............ spoken to the suppliers and they definately have 50"-52" chest Dutch coveralls in stock, possibly larger in their weekend delivery, so looks like a plan :good:

Good point re the time / money equation but as it's only likely to get used once maybe twice a year, cost is really the key factor.

Bit of a necro post....but I knocked up an FJ smock back in 2007 from some US coveralls. Took an hour of cutting and sewing and didn`t look too bad in the end, think the grand total was about £15.

Looks good mate :good:

I have the covvies, size 54" chest, cost around £13.00 posted, just haven't had chance to do the needle-work yet ......

For anyone that has a pukka repro (or original) step-in smock, what length is the inside leg, ie from crutch to 'leg' hem and what size are the pocket flaps ? Cheers.

Can`t help with the pocket flaps unfortunately, but regarding the leg length I popped my coveralls on and marked them at the top of my kneecap. When I put the hem on they were just the right length. There was a chap called Jeks at the original D Day event with a repro step in smock and I did a comparison and the leg length on mine was within a centimetre of the repro one.

Progress so far ...........

Used the 'kneecap' measurement, with a little adjustment, cheers :good:
Hemmed with 'WonderWeb' (other hemming tapes are available !) to a: save on sewing and b: make the project accessible to peeps with no sewing machine.

Can't decide whether to faff around fitting fake pocket flaps - obviously the original, 1st patt. smocks didn't have pockets ................. but the flaps make the smock look more 'iconic' ?? :?
NB : Pocket flaps could be constructed and fitted with the web tape.

Cost so far - 'bout £13 :D-- attachment is not available --

Looks good bud, only reason I added pockets on mine was to keep my fags in, To be honest once the rest of your kit is on over the top of it, I`m not sure if the lack of pockets will be that noticeable. I think the secret is to sling it on with the rest of your gear and have a look in the mirror. :good:

Cheers :)

I need to get a belt and pouches sorted; I was going to make a set of pouches but as per the post above, on reflection it would take a lot longer than the time is worth .........

Pic of smock in use at 'Fuhrer's'.

Improvements >

Top pocket flaps ?
Fastenings on cuffs ?
Leg hems maybe a couple of inches higher ?

On the whole I'm pleased with the result so far though, and it enabled me to actually attend an event !! :happyclap: :happyswing:-- attachment is not available --

That standard is definitely over the level i would require at even a more serious ww2 event.

If it looks like the real thing from 10 feet , thats as good as it needs to be. at 10 feet range, your shooting to kill anyway.

If the bugger who knife kills you complains you dont have the right amount of pockets, then hes a stitch spotter, plain and simple :D

:giggle: ..... maybe he's just planning on using the knife to unpick some of the incorrect stitching ??

I've bought myself a set of overalls from here for £15 to do for this project, is it possibly the same one you got?
