I've got some early helmet decals for my FJ helmet, but I haven't had a huge amout of luck finding decent photos of exactly they are supposed to go. The closest so far is in one Andrew Mollos WW2 uniform books which seems to show the eagle centred on and underneath the rivet on the left hand side of the helmet, and the shield somewhere similar on the other side.
Was there a precise spot they were supposed to go, or was it one of those things which varied with unit/time of issue or whatever?
Thanks
Martin

Thats about right. They were factory applied so would have a regulation position (not sure what) but it wouldn't always be exact. It should be single decal after after March 1940 but of course that wasn't always the case.

Thanks, very useful site.
Argh single decal, it seems a shame not to use both, the shield is just so spiffy. I shall have a think.

The didn't always paint over them as instructed so you can have both if you really want. the alternative is to paint over it and then wear off the paint so the decal starts to show through like the paint has been worn down over a period of time.
Of academic interest - I've posted this before somewhere but the film shows decal fixing as well as the manufacturing process of the M40.

Hmm, that is interesting, particularly as the decals being applied are Luftwaffe eagles!
