Below are some nice scans of some Osprey sets from the Men-at-Arms series Waffen SS volumes (1-4).

well, they included an Oberscharfuhrer from Charlemagne with the cuff title, so I can't complain.

Someone on mp.net had managed to scan a bunch of these so I figured I might as well put them up. The only problem I have with them is that they don't really list their sources for their artwork, which is kind of a problem.

I always reckon Osprey is like the first port of call you should make when doing a new topic . loadout or wargames army.

Sure they ocasioanly make some mistakes but *any* single source will have a few errors or inconsistancies.

I usually buy an osprey before a new project to get a good overall background on the subject and for some projects its all i need (if im say only painting a single squad of us infantry and i'm not too worried if they are 'right')

If i'm going to spend

Quite often its a period photo they've redrawn.

If you get the battle of the bulge one you can quite clealry pick out the guys in a lot of photos they have done colour pics of.

I never said one way or another gadge I just know from previous posts on here and elsewhere that opinions of the osprey books vary from person to person.

I could say what mine is ... but I won't :P :rasp: (NB wouldn't recommend the German womens book to anyone unless they've read up first, rather than the other way around )

No i know you didnt but it i was explaining what the common argument is on most 'historical' forums.

Like i say i think they are great source books.

All sources can be inaccurate and its why its best to get good cross section.

Like the bouchery books, i used to think they were inflaible til i had some of the glaring errors pointed out to me now im more vary and they were

well, I'm basing a whole uniform off the Charlemagne plate so I am not going to complain too much, but I guess I would just use these to help generate ideas, as always period photos should be used to ensure accuracy.

The Charlemagne volunteer they have pictured is based on 100% speculation as far as I know. They list no sources and even offer that only engineers from the division received the cuff title (I own the book the plate comes from), which is sometimes regarded as a fake by collectors. However, he looks good enough that I overlook the unlikely chance that such a soldier existed.
