Vintage Swedish or Repro German ?

Looking for some grey wool trousers, suitable for Heer, Lufty or SS .......... and, as always, on a budget.

Been looking on fleabay and there are currently some Swedish 1940's vintage grey wool trousers @£35.00, that look very similar to the M43 pattern.

Advice given for Brit kit is that converted '49 patt can be a better bet than repro BD trousers due to the quality of the materials used in some of the repros; is that the case with the German trousers ? Would the Swedish trews be a better buy than trying to pick up some used repro M40/M43 off the forums ?

Opinions please guys ..................

I wear 1942 dated Swedish trousers, hard wearing, well made etc but take out the boot clips or they will kill you ankles. 35 quid is very expensive though, you can get decent second hand repro for that.

Cheers

Cheers for the comments.

My problem is size (oo'er) ............

At 6ft+, 50"+ chest and 40"+ waist it's difficult to find any gear at reasonable, let alone cheap, prices that fits. The £35 trews are the first Swedish ones that I've seen advertised that will fit. However, as Martin points out, that's around the price that used repros have been advertised at ........... when they are available in my size :banghead:

There are sets, assumedly Chinese, on fleabay from a non-gear supplier at £75 for the tunic and trousers, but normally the prices reflect the quality. Whilst in the future a tunic would be good, trousers are the current priority, as I have camo smocks that will fit most scenarios.

Hence the thinking - is the (high) price of the Swedish, which are 'near enough', worth their quality over affordable, used repros if/when available ?
If they were £20-£25 I'd have snapped them up !

Trousers are something which get a ton of wear & tear so I'd get something hardwearing, cheap ones are just going to rip. The Swedish ones are well made and perhaps most important, are available now rather than waiting for a repro to come up in your size.

All good advice, cheers :)

Bit the bullet (or bb as the case may be) and bought the Swedish trousers; arrived today.

First impressions are good :good:

Good, thick woollen material. Possibly a slight brown tint to them (?) but that seems to change in different lights, and as the oft-quoted caveat states - suppliers/materials changed so shades would vary with supply.
These, if anything, are slightly big, although as 'Strictly' point out ... you can never have too much ballroom !
The design of the trousers allow for easy alteration if required.
There are thigh pockets which I'll probably remove; spare material is always useful.
The legs are finished in canvas gaiters with leather straps, and what look like curtain hooks on the inside - I assume that these are the boot clips that you're referring to Martin ? These will certainly be removed as they will rub/chaff like a b****r. I may remove the leather straps as well and use the hook backing tabs to run just simple laces or tapes through to tighten the legs, as I'll be using low boots with gaiters anyway.

All-in-all - highly recommended, especially if you're a smaller size and can pick them up for the average £15.00-£20.00 posted.

I think mine are an earlier pattern (no thigh pockets), but otherwise they sound similar. I also have laces to tie the bottoms. Those hooks are a mystery, I assume they are designed to clip over a loop of lace around the outside of the boot, but you can't do that with either ammo boots or German low boots and I learned the hard way that they are agonising if you tuck them into the top of your socks. So remove them :)

Cheers
