i am so ashamed, but i have to ask this couple of questions because it's too hard to follow WW2 battles without knowing this. I'd appreciate if you wouldn't laugh
Here comes the question:
What was US WW2 army made of?
Explaination: I dont know how are all this things for eg. battalions, divisions, companies organised.
So I would really like if someone would explain me what's the biggest "part" of the army, than its smaller parts, than smaller parts of the previous smaller parts, and who commands them.
Now excuse me, I am going to cover myself with black blanket so that no one can see my shame lol
PS. whats is PIR?
Ah, I know PIR is Parachute Infantry Regiment!
I must admit I'm always bemused by army division structure - I understand the hierarchy but how it's composed seems to be a bit arbitrary! Seems to make perfect sense to those who have been in the services though!
And since I'm bemused I'll let others explain...
Are you after a basic understanding of the different military divisions within the US army during WW2?
But i believe it is:
Division (eg 101st airborne)
battalion (eg 506th PIR, 2nd Rangers)
Company - A specific group of the battalion e.g. 506th PIR
Such as A, B, C, D, E etc of that company (e.g. B= Baker Company C=Charlie Company E= Easy company)
Squads
Rank
Anyone else any more ideas?
Army Comanders
Division (101st)
Regiment (506th)
Battalion (2nd)
1st Battalion
Able
Baker
Charlie
2nd Battalion
Dog
Easy
Fox
3rd Battalion
George
Harry
Item
Company (Easy)
Platoon (3rd of 3)
Squads (2nd of 3)
Teams (Fire Team or Assault Team)
Rank (PFC)
I think
i dont understand this part :
Platoon (3rd of 3)
Squads (2nd of 3)
Everyone's missed out Corps at the top, under Army.
That is, an army is made up of corps, which are in turn made up of divisions and so on as listed above.
Is this what you're after http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/l/blchancommand.htm
exactly that. thx all
Thats a nice find Pete
