During the final battle sequence in Romel, they use two 30.Cal machineguns which would be the 1919A4 variety.
If you watch the scene in the bell tower where the paratrooper 'Porker' or 'Parker' what ever it is, is firing down and just as he runs out of ammunition the empty rounds can clearly be seen dropping out of the bottom of the gun...
Recently at Autumn Mist, courtesy of Webby, I learned that the 1919A4 did not drop its rounds out underneath once they were spent but instead came out the other side of the gun in the belt still.
Am I seeing thing?
Are these a different variety of the machinegun, possibly the slightly later M37, based on the 1919, used in Korea?
Hmmmmmm.....

im sure u would find the answer on you tube mate
here you go
That shows the belt coming out of the other side with NO rounds in the belt, the rounds can been seen dropping out underneath the gun, below where they enter it.
Its harder to see when he's firing it off the jeep because it has the new style links so that nothing at all comes out of the other side!
Never the less...Webby mate, reckon you might be wrong there.

The shells come out of the bottom, if you use a linked belt the links come out of the right side,
Steve.D
Yeap,as steve.d says the rounds do fall through the bottom and the belt comes out from the right side.

That's what I thought, I shall now proceed to remove all the spent rounds from the right side of the belt.

Also if you watch it he picks up the gun saying im out of ammo but he clearly still has a full belt in the gun, or at least thats what i remember from seing it last.
If you look closely he's got something like 8 rounds left in the belt, which in machinegun terms is a bit useless however it is a little perplexing as to why he actually stopped there and didn't rattle out the last few rounds...nevermind still an amazing film.

he was calling for up upham at the time. So a full belt would be okay for a few more minutes while ran across with more ammo.
Oh no i meant the bit in the bell tower where theres a shot of the last rounds going through the gun and then in the next shot he says im out of ammo picks up the gun and although blurred you can still see it has a belt of ammo in it.
Ahhh rite..I think i know what bit you mean from memory. Those final scenes still give me goose pimples.
If you look on the film porker is using ammo in link, not on a belt anyway.
I said at the december game you should make the ejection port bigger, i didn't say it was for the brass.
He's not using links, the belt can be clearly seen running through the gun as he finishes off the belt.
I'm sure you said there had to be a cut extended backwards to allow for the expended brass to come out of the other side.

errrrr wrong! Just before Parker says "im out of 30 caliber" theres a shot of the gun looking upwards at it out of the window, its clearly held together by black links.
I could act this film
Ok fair enough but the links still come out the other side and the spent rounds drop out of the bottom.
On another note, you coming to Taffy's event at Exsite in May?

Hollywood buddy you dont see much of Parker when he's shooting, only the barrel, so they dont need to use the fabric belt in the shots. (saves money)
Whereas the 1 that Melish and Henderson use, you see it quite often, hence the fabric 1s.
Depends on when it is in May, I might be in the US. But if I am free ill be there
Yeh I get what you mean, hope you can make it bud.
