A Lookheed P-38 Ligtning flown by Lt. Robert F. "Fred" Elliott was discovered off the coast of wales. Elliot had crashlanded the aircraft there in 1942 and escaped unharmed.

The aircraft was disarmed and promptly forgotten, until in Juli 2007 shifting currents washed the sands from the wreck.

Coool.

Theres loads of wrecks of WWII aircraft round the hills where I live (about 85+) ranging from all over the war, including a couple of prototype jets. Sadly none are in as good shape as that one.

No longer involved in airsoft.

There were a few crashes in my area throughout WW2. I know where a B17 crashed near Heusden and where a B24 crashed near Breda. Most were recovered for scrap after the war. (some pieces also went to Camp Vught during the war, prisoners sorted the parts for recycling)
The last remains of a Typhoon were recently recovered from a field near Hank.

My father thinks he saw a plane spiral out of control at the end of the war.
One of my friends, who goes out with a metal detector sometimes, says there is a wreck in the Loonse & Drunense Duinen, a nature reserve to the South of my home town. It could very well have been the one my father saw going down. Of course my old man was 2 to 3 years old at the time.

My town was also hit by two V1 missiles that malfunctioned on their way to Antwerp if I recall correctly. It caused a number of civilian casualties. An aunt of mine had just walked past one of the locations before the bomb struck.

The park near where i grew up had a lake during the war, and as it was near both the Rolls Royce factory and a ww2 airfield, they used Spitfires and engines as landfill material to fill it in after the war, and built a playground on top of it! :D
