Genuine questions:

The reason I ask is because many struggle to get to a site in good time, and then leaving after a day-long game and driving for several hours can be very tiring or even dangerous.

sorry i missed this point , and as i don't drive i asked our drivers and they all agreed they probably worse on the Sunday having been up late , had a few drinks , probably not slept well then run around again for a bit then had to drive back.

but like most recent posts i think it will be torn some folks will be well up for weekenders , some for been out for 24 hours , and some for one dayers, i think also as ww2 is a fairly more mature audience we tend to maybe have more real life stuff that gets in the damm way hence the one day high response , if i was single etc then maybe weekend events would be more tempting.

I think the weekenders are fun if you can afford the time, part of it is the extra time chatting to people in the evening and spending the whole weekend dressed up in WW2 kit. A whole two nights and two days away is a major commitment though, I think I've only actually done that twice. Other times I've driven down (very) early and stayed one night or just done the Saturday. I've stayed two nights at a couple of one day events which were a long drive away.

With weekenders people have the option, both days or just one.

My personal ideal is Friday afternoon off work, pitch up Friday afternoon/evening for the usual pre-game sheningans, up early and play all day (after all, who really sleeps the night before a big game?), then pack up and back home in time for Borgen :) Nice mix of camping and game play. Often just a single day (drive there and back) is all I can a manage though.

Other people will like other stuff though.

Cheers
Martin

Being self-employed taking working time off on a Friday costs me big time. (Those that are employed will have to use up precious holiday if the are to take half or full days off on Friday - so also costly).

A game would have to be very close for me to rush off to a game very early in the morning then dash back in the evening after a days battling - very knackering and this is exactly what I used to do for open days. However, the WW2 airsoft experience is a sum of the parts - chats with chums, a bit of camping, and a few hours of battling etc. I hate rushing to events with minutes to spare - I am an organised and orderly person, flapping and rushing doesn't suit me at all. We are trying the noon to noon idea for the upcoming training day to allow relaxed travelling to site on Saturday morning from whatever distance, some grafting for six hours or so, some evening scoff and chat, shut-eye, graft, breakfast, graft, then a leisurely drive home Sunday afternoon to arrive in time for tea and have time to pack away all kit so it doesn't hang around for days. :D

Personally, WW2 events are a bit of 'me time' away from work and family and home. So for a few weekends a year the wife has to do without me. A bit of a hardship for her, that is true, but she bears up. She bears up so well she actually asks me when the next WW2 game is, so she is as keen as me for some reason. :? Oh, and I don't have young kids now - I never thought it right to indulge myself with hobbies when I had a dependent family. WW2 airsoft demands that you have free time, can travel easily and have disposable income - without those you are stuffed and end up a kit collector!

I put one day on the ticky box, but that is only my preference. We all have our preferences, but no event is perfect so we suck it up and get there.

Indeed. Did it once(ish) and it was 'orrible. all 'rush, rush, play airsoft. fun is Ended! home!' never again.

It sounds very civilised, I'm looking forward to it. iirc Devils HIll had a late(ish) start time too?

Yup, we ran it along the same lines. The late start wasn't helped by the massive cunt of a gamekeeper who, rather ironically, called Chommers a Nazi. I mean, it wasn't like he looked like a Nazi or anything.....oh wait.

Personally I prefer saturday games myself. Being one of the "50 plus" players, I'm normally fairly well knackered at the end of the day and looking forward to chucking down some beers and having a good yak in the evening. Sunday morning after getting up with a hangover, I'm ready to get home and have a nice long bath. I have played a few weekenders but I never seem to be able to summon up the same enthusiasum as Saturday, probably as I'm just done in. The bane of getting older I guess.

It just doesnt work well like that.

Most events cap the players at say 30 a side and then open up another 10 per side when one side gets to 30, another when both are up to 40 etc.

That way you never have a disparity of more than 9 or so players difference a side, usually that isnt enough to sway things.

If you dont do this you can potentially end up with 80 german players and say 27 brits and it becomes a difficult game to run as the allies are run ragged and dont have the men to actually manouvre, launch attacks, do feints etc (obviously this can happen the other way)

if you let people turn up on whatever day they feel like it you might well cap places and know that in total you'll have say 40 germans vs 47 allies but if say on the saturday only 10 of the germans turn up the game plan goes to pot...

Its not like your standard game day when you can just swap people over to a different armband as obviously someone has turned up with only allied or axis gear and cant just swap sides.

You *can* adjust the scenario on the hoof but its loads of hassle which is better avoided by knowing that you're going to have 'x' vs 'y' for the duration.
