What kind of paint does airsoft manufactures use? i tried to repaint my guns with paints like krylon and tamiya but they came off like egg shells with a little scratch of nails...
The original paints on my gun (Tanaka kar98) are very thin black layer.

I was always under the impression that they parkerized the metal rather than painting it ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkerize )

Have you tried using a metal primer first before applying the paint? Matt varnish spray may also help.

No longer involved in airsoft.

on real guns maybe, on all mine it's painted. I imagine the paint is baked on at high temperature during the manufacturing process to make it harder and adhere better.

There's not much you can do to copy that, short of totally dismantling your gun and then spraying and re-baking the parts in an oven after painting, but it's all a dark art as to what type of paint and temperature to get the best effects.

I've managed it in the past with car engine parts, using cellulose paint and baking it in the oven at a low temperature for a few hours, which was successful, but i'd be dubious about cooking airsoft monkey-metal parts as it might weaken them.
