Im also not that sure why they didnt use the boys as a large calibre sniper rifle once it was proven inefficent against armour, the barrat of the day as it were.

Yeah but the mid war german version proved itself as useful as a chockolate fireguard compared to the 20mm fitted to the back of an sdkfz 12, so why not just make more, it was able to fire on the move, where the flackpanzerIII &IV had to stop and lower the protective screens befour they could man the AA.

The British had a bofors fitted portee as well as the 2pdr in N Africa, not sure how it performed or if any apeard anywhere else.

ATR because:

Its easy to train someone how to use it.
Two men can crew it one at a push you need realistically three for 50 cal and ideally about five. Weight comes into this as well.

Ammo - you can carry lots and use it sparingly
you give conscripts 50cal and belt of a thousand and they will be combat effective for 1 minute

Ease of production, you can bang out a dozen ATRs for 1 HMG
If you use them en masse as with soviet doctrine they still chew up light armour, a top hit or rear from an atr will still do damage to all but medium/heavy tanks.

Lastly its the psychological factor of giving th infantrymen an AT weapon, they dont know it will bounce off as they dont have the hindsight we do. A few will elarn that by experience but its easier to go inot battl ethinkiing you have the means to destroy armour than go in wiht nothing and *know* you cant touch tanks.

For much the same reason we still issued law 94 when we knew it couldn't penetrate the side armour of soviet mbts in reality.

Nah, cant agree there. There's nothing more demoralising than realising in the midst of a battle that the kit you've been issued with isnt worth shit.

Take the Pak 36/37 - commonly known as the "doorknocker" by its crews, due to its inability to do any more to a T34 than wake up the people sitting inside it.

Sorry Kermit I side with gadge, If you are in the line and you know you have bugger all against armour you will run as soon as armour arives, if you think you can nock them outl you will at least wait untill you have not untill you panic, and by then you will have to stand and fight with what you have or get mown down if you move.

It is a bit crappy by the Hirearchy though.

i,l look it up mate :)

i was thinking more of the quads that the RN used, pom poms , lovely

the best use i,v herd for bofors was in late 44and 45, was in holand/germany
we used them as night time corridor markers with tracers, one gun on each flank firing away at the german lines and the infantry advancing inbetween,
must have been fun for the germans with 40mm tracers flying about :)
Oh and not to mention the artilery at the same time,
