WW2 Camo Windproof ?

Mods : Not sure on the best place to put this so if it's wrong, please move to a more appropriate section ..................

I've got hold of a SASS 'reproduction' WW2 Windproof. Very good condition, excepting the fact that the previous owner had cut and sewn 'gussets' into the elbows, of DPM windproof material, to give 'more elbow room' (??). I've tried to carefully remove the 'gussets', close up the slits and have glued the DPM windproof material behind the cuts; I've used glue rather than sewing to maintain the integrity of the windproof material. The smock is just a tad tight on me, however, with the sleeves being a few inches too short.

I had acquired it initially as I was impressed with the quality of the reproduction, certainly the best repro that I had seen for a while. SASS I remembered had made repro WW2 windproof's in the '80's but hadn't seen any since so it was 'vintage' in itself, and almost looked too good ................
Whilst the buttons and drawcords are obviously 'modern' the material used isn't the thick, denison-type canvas used by the likes of Silvermans (wrong colour, wrong material, wrong cut etc) but more like modern gaberdine thickness, similar to the Panzerfaust ones that I've seen/had/sold on but less 'shiny'.

I decided to contact SASS, with a view to doing some work on it for me - lengthened sleeves, full length zip etc.. After a great deal of struggling to contact SASS, whom previously I had always been impressed with and recommended to others, having spent a good number of ££'s on their kit, along with a lot of the local lads, I was begrudingly told by a particularly insolent Paul, that he believed the smock was made with original material, and therefore couldn't/wouldn't help.

I'm uncertain now as to how to proceed -

The smock is sized @ 97cms chest - although at a 122cm-126cm chest I can still wear it over a norgie, it's snug. Also the sleeves are a few inches too short, and would need at least woolen cuffs sewing on, and may then still be shorter than desirable.

I could have some of the lining or lower pockets removed to lengthen the sleeves, but it would have to be done 'correctly' - SASS would have been the place of choice but they are obviously not interested.

My belief is that it is genuine period material, having seen a few 'used and abused' faded ones, and having checked a few of the other forums/sites for comments and pics. However, I can't prove that it's genuine as SASS are 'too busy' to return my emails > it would have taken less time to politely return an email then it took to be obtuse on the phone ................

I could keep it and bodge it in some way or possibly sell it on, but what value would be placed on it ?
If the SASS label was removed, and period buttons/cords were fitted, it would be very difficult to tell this apart from a 'genuine' item, imho.

This is to some extent 'thinking aloud' but I'd welcome some other input / constructive comments / thoughts please ............................-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

Looks good. I used to buy a lot of kit from SASS myself in the 80's. That looks much nicer than the "panzerfaust" windproofs. However, you couldn't sell it as an original WW2 smock, even if it is made from original material, so the price would drop somewhere in between the real deal and the repro, in my opinion.

That type of smock was still issued to the SAS until the 70's, when it was replaced by the modern dpm SAS smock. That's what I think this one is, a copy of the original "SAS" smock. SASS stuff was/is usually better made than issue stuff, with more features and/or options, so it makes sense that they offered an alternative to punters. I had a pair of their dpm windproof trousers and they were much better than issue ones.

When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!

Much what I was thinking :good:

I will acquire kit to 'collect' but normally only if it fits - this fits 'just' ...........

I think the main dilema is having taken a long time to find a decent one, whether to 'butcher' this one to make it more useable for me or to sell it on 'as is' and give someone else the benefit ??

When you say 'price between real deal and repro', what ballpark figure were you thinking it could be advertised for, as original smocks seem to go for silly money these days ....................
