those that know me will probably think i'm mad and probably keen to die of dehydration but i'm keen on the idea of a greatcoat , does not have to be mega bucks perfection but a good lookalike German greatcoat, don't mind dying it or replacing buttons etc , I've seen a few post war German ones for reasonable money but cant see from the pictures if they are wool .

Gav, I wouldn't bother with post war stuff. Save your pennies and get one that looks good, mate. You can get them from all the major sellers, and ebay. :good:

Mine is Swedish, I just swapped the buttons and put loops on for shoulder boards. One day I'll reverse the waist adjuster on the back.

Yes it is a look-alike, but it is 1941 dated so you can't get more 'WW2' than that....

I could have bought a repro, but I quite enjoy sewing and the real things are just so much better made. I've only actually worn it for one game (Bastogne) but I can't say I found it especially sweaty. It seems to be a bit lighter than my British one.

Cheers
Martin

just found a shop called ww2sale.com and they had an m40 greatcoat for £82.64 delivered, will let you know how it is when it arrives, was reduced from £180 to £64.47 or so they say, not going to get heaps of combat use ,just evening wear really so if its a bit weak it wont matter.

You'd have been better off getting one in the UK, there's not much difference in price. Much easier to sort out any problems with sizing or quality control and, no chance of getting raped by customs either. The ones Anthony at Militaria.net sells are very nice (and warm on those cold socials!).

I'll be interested to know what turns up - ww2sale are a weird set up. Gawd knows how you would get any joy out of the Virgin Islands - at one time they had no contact details at all. Oh, and that greatcoat isn't gaberdine, it's 'wool'.

Their charging is weird: Sub-Total: £64.47 + Expedited Shipping: £15.47 + VAT 17.5%: £2.71 = Total: £82.64
Why are they charging VAT, they aren't in the EC!

Dodgy postal practice: "Tax Fee. In order to minimize customers' tax costs, we will mark your package as sample or gift and claim low value on our shipment package(normally we declare it lower than $ 80); so that you do not need to pay extra tax."

If HMRC get you for VAT then you are looking at £28 or so VAT and fees. And if the goods are under declared you may have a dispute on your hands.
However, it's £99 + postage for a very excellent Sturm M40 from Anthony and you can send it back if it doesn't fit.

Pete's right, makes no sense to buy abroad if you can get it here!

well we'll see i guess but i hope it's ok, i really did not want to spend over £100 on one though ,it's going to get limited use in game so it attracts a low budget.

Oh, you will get your money's worth out of it - I've played two whole games in mine and it is jolly useful for socials (I lose body heat like billyoh when stood around in a dropping air temperature). I rate a greatcoat as it is not only an iconic bit of kit but its jolly useful (I've used it as a blanket and a pillow too!).

Second the recommendation for use as a pillow and/or blanket.

well i just received my greatcoat from ww2 sale and looking at it it looks like they missed returning the bottom edge of the coat, its just a plain cut material edge, the rest looks really good so i was just wondering is this correct or have they missed sewing the bottom edge, its the later war style coat with matching collar not the earlier one with the green collar.

Not got any reference to back this up but I'm sure I heard somewhere that this was normal and the troops could sew it up to whatever length suited them best.

Uncut edge is correct - either turn it up to suit your height/preference or leave it as-is (you can trim it as it wears!)
