I've decided to go with a Gross Deutschland loadout, since I've pretty much got everything for it. Stubblehopper suggested the formation of a GD unit, similar to the Hohenstaufen one he's organising. If anybody's interested in doing that, let me know. :)

OK chaps, I don't want us to be stitch-counters, but obviously if we're going to portray GrossDeutschland, we need to have reasonably realistic loadouts. (As regards where to get any of it, just ask.) Here are my suggestions:

ESSENTIALS

M36 or M40 Feldgrau tunic and trousers.
In my eyes the Feldgrau looks way better than green HBT. Despite it being wool, I have not found it excessively hot in skirmishes - it seems to "breathe".

GrossDeutschland cuff title To be worn on right arm, 15cm above the cuff, but clear of cuff pleats.

GrossDeutschland shoulderboards Dark green with embroidered GD in white and white piping for infantry. Officers have metal GD badge on theirs.

Werhmacht eagle, worn above right chest pocket

Marching boots (jackboots)
Short boots and green gaiters would be acceptable, but jackboots preferrable.

Enlisted man's belt and buckle

Y-straps Austrian / post-war perfectly acceptable.

M35 or M42 helmet In green, or weathered, eastern front stylee. I have a splinter cover and rubber foliage band.

or

M36, M38, M40 or M43 cap with eagle / cockade

A German weapon MP40 or KAR98. Or MG42, MP44, MG34, G43 if you can find / make one! Sidearms optional. I guess Soviet weapons would also be permissable, but not American ones, please.

NICE TO HAVE

OK, this stuff is not essential, but I have some of it - the stuff that is actually useful for skirmishing, i.e. carrying stuff you need.

Zeltbahn A splinter camo piece of cloth, usually carried rolled up. Can be worn as a rain cape or a long camo smock. Check out http://www.zeltbahn.com

Water canteen

Gas mask tin You can remove the mask and use it for storage space - as the troops used to.

Bread bag - green Good for storage.

Mess tin If you really want to.

Entrenching tool! For die-hards only! I personally have enough to carry!

Other insignia / awards No Knight's Crosses please! Keep it simple and reasonably understated. To be honest, even my loadout is pushing it a bit. However, you would be likely to have an Infantry Assault Badge and Russian Campaign ribbon as a minimum.

NO-NO.

Any Waffen SS camo gear To be honest, even so-called Heer camo designs like Tan & Water were really not used very much. I would suggest only splinter pattern (Zeltbahn-style) camo should be allowed.

Yeah, I know. However, I decided to at least be part of something, since I got bored of people asking which unit I was, and I didn't know!

GD is recognisable and has a snazzy cuff title too. :D

Gotta say, if I wasn't already committed to the ss in terms of my loadout ect, this is the Heer team that I would join, anyone ever read "The forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer, that has got to be the best book to come out of the Eastern front, cold, graphic, brutal, and scary, truly horrible, he just simply told it as it was.

If you read Sajer's book, which is all about his time in the Gross Deutschland Division, you'll find that at the very end, what's left of the division after the Russians have finished with them, is transported by sea from the East Prussian pocket to the Western Front, where they finally surrender to the British. Not that it matters much, I reacon once the Chinese bring out a ppsh someone will start off a Russian ww2 airsoft team anyway.

"Sniper on the eastern front" is also one of the best books I've ever read, I'm tempted to say even better than the Gross Deutschland one. Anyway, getting back to topic, it seems a shame that nobody's interested in forming a Wehrmacht team, personally, I'd like to see a fallschirmjager team take off as well. All in good time tho' these things will happen at some point.

I've had a good search around about the variations on the cuff titles. Check this lot out. http://www.atthefront.com/g_insig_heercuff.htm

They changed over the years, but the visible difference between officer's and enlisted man's are negligable - so, anything goes!

Hi Steiner

Don't know whether you are still interested in forming a GD airsofting group/team, but if you are then I'd be interested to chat some more. I have recently got into airsofting, and have also recently become a member of GD Recon. reenacting/living history group.

Cheers - :D

Dave
