Having seen Steiner's post about the Germans being the hunted, I think now is the time for me to pitch my idea for an event based on just that. I've been thinking about it for ages and, don't want someone to beat me to it!

It would be based on the German "great escape" from a pow camp in Bridgend. The beauty of this is that any German, or axis (apart from Japs obviously!) uniform would be suitable, so, those U boat crew loadouts could finally be used! It would begin just after the actual escape (no need to stage that) and, the escapees would have to link up with friendly agents in order to acquire kit, orders and, potentially, weapons. Via a series of RV's, they would make their way to a waiting U boat or E boat. They would be on the run for the whole time and, if captured, would join the allied side, either by changing kit, or by remaining as Germans but betraying their comrades.

For the Allies, if we set it in 1944, we could include Americans as well as the usual Brit's. There is also room for civvies too.

Loads of room for extra sub missions, such as intelligence gathering around the D-Day build up, etc. For a site, it would be great if we got Nesscliffe from IED, as it's the perfect blend of open country, woodland and buildings (and it's flat, so, noone moaning about hills!).

What do you guys reckon?

Firstly, Andy's thing is a million miles away from this...

Secondly, I like!

Thirdly, we wouldn't have to wait for good ground cover (as you would need for Z) and we could incorporate Home Guard.

Love it! Pete, you've got a better relationship with IED than I do. Do you want to have a chat with them about possibilities of useing Nesscliffe?

FWIW, when I tried to go through Urban 6 they just prevaricated for aaaages.

Cool beans. I'll develop a gameplan for it and flesh out some more details. I don't know the IED guys at all to be honest, it was always Guy who dealt with them!

Yes, I spoke to him via Facebook last week and though he was surprised we were bothering to resurrect CiA he wished us all the best in our endeavours.

Dammit, I've gone and got all excited :D

Hut 9 : Camp 198 : Island Farm : The Great Escape : Welsh Break Out

It would be awesome if we could do this on the weekend of 9th/10th March, the closest we can get to the night of 10th/11th March 1945!

I'll check my diary for 2013 and let you know. It would be rather spiffing if we got the dates to tie in.

Thanks for doing the contact with IED Steve. I've no objection at all to Guy doing it if needs be, if it helps us to get the use of Nesscliffe. In fact, we could offer him a free place as well.

Bah! Just checked my diary and, I'm working that weekend, with no real scope for leave unfortunately. So, if we want to roll in March, it will need to be 2nd/3rd, or 16th/17th. Worth noting is that it might be bloody cold then as well!

Bah on the dates!

Could make it the first weekend in March then. It is Easter at the end of the month. Josh said he was planning a game in March and the one this year was the middle of March. I'll check with him and see if he has any concrete plans yet.

I'm not particularly bothered about guessing whether it will be cold or not - I don't remember Arnhem as being cold this year - could be bright sunny and warmish, or cold and wet, who knows!

I'm not available that weekend. I'll email Ed about dates in March/April.

Weather or temperature don't bother me personally, it's the punters I'm thinking of, as most of them have proven to be pussies in the past! Also, I couldn't care less if josh is running a WW2 sisk in March, as we won't get any of his players coming to our event anyway, so, it won't be a date clash of any sort as far as that goes. I think that the sooner we can set a concrete date, the sooner we can announce and, bag our "slot" without causing any aggro with other organisers aside from josh.

I'm inclined to agree. I was staggered by Steiner's recent comments about Jedburgh as he was on his arse after the first hour and in bed by 11pm!! :slap:

Aaaanyway, here's Ed's reply:

Hello mate,

Congratulations on getting things off the ground again.

With regard to Nesscliff for a WW2 event, from my point of view, this is fine. However, I need to check with MOD & see if they have any issues. A decision may take 2-3 weeks as they are busy with Regs/TA PDT commitments down there right now.

I am assuming you have seen some of the photos of my recent events there & you are interested in the farm complex & outlying buildings known as Acksea Farm. Should MOD have no issues (i suspect Waffen SS uniforms will be a big issue), I can request a date for an event using Acksea. This will be pencilled in but I'm sure you understand that operational commitments may mean that MOD cancel the booking due to Regs or TA units needing the area. Final confirmation would not be received from them until 6 weeks prior to the event date. I haven't known a third party event cancelled at Nesscliff yet. This is normal procedure on MOD sites.

With regard to the financial agreement between CiA & IED, the T & C's of my leasing of the area are based on numbers of people on site, this includes staff or other none players.
The fee payable by CiA to IED would be £40 per person payable within 7 days of the event. This includes running the event under my PLI policy.

If the above is ok with you, I will make the enquiry with my contacts & get an answer for you asap.

Cheers

Ed

My bold in that as it could have a major impact on pricing. Dave, so you know, at the end of our last event we ensured that the CiA coffers were emptied so we're effectively starting our accounts from scratch.

The limitation on German uniforms shouldn't be an issue for this event as they're escapees and wouldn't necessary have been allowed to wear any politically 'offensive' insignia anyway. At least, we can make that our justification anyway.

I've told Ed we'll have a chat about things whilst he speak to the MoD.

Ta

Heh, I'd assumed you had divvied out remaining funds!

Re uniforms. Prisoners would either have worn black-dyed British battledress (donkey jackets or even jumpers/shirt sleeves would be fine for players) and the officers all wore their own service uniforms. So we could allow uniforms (of any service arm) and be very inclusive. The reality though, as you say, was the escapees wore what they could muster to pass as civvies - farm labourers, factory workers etc etc. So, there is a decision to made there - a myriad of uniforms (even drinking kit without the medals) would look great (maybe could be worn for the social which could have a POW camp feel to it  ) it isn't appropriate for beyond the wire, which this game covers.

I guessed this wouldn't be cheap. We don't have a prop dressing to do at all so the expenses would be minor. I don't know whether Pete was thinking of running this over the weekend or overnight but in any case £45-50 should be OK.

The big issue though, as Ed points out, is the risk of a game getting cancelled. I wonder if we could have a plan B for an alternative location, should things go tits up?

Edit: One good thing is that he is charging per head and hasn't stated a minimum number...
