Kameraden,

Our forces are spread thinly on our section of the line, to defend the Pass successfully against the Amis, we must establish efficient and effective communications between our strongpoints so that artillery fire can be directed on to targets, reserves can be quickly sent to contain any breakthough on the line, and counter-attacks can be successfully co-ordinated.

We have a number of FF33 field telephones in our inventory along with a large quantity of cable, but we need volunteers for the roles of Funkers to deploy, connect, and operate the equipment to ensure that the strongpoints can remain in constant communication with the forward and Divisional HQ's.

We require 3 volunteers for this role. please submit your applications in triplicate to: Stabs Battalion Hauptquartier, 4th Fallschirm Div.

Applicants should familiarise themselves with the operation of the Feldfernsprecher33 as a matter of urgency:

So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

One volunteer Funker reporting for duty.

The manual is not very reassuring, however I will try very hard indeed not to a) break the handset in half b) allow clumsy jagers to trip over the cable and smash the phone unit.

Cheers
Martin

Danke Martin :good:

There is not much to it really and they are pretty robust. Some of our phones are Actually Czech made TP-25 field phones which are smaller and lighter than the FF33's but operationally identical.

The phones will have carry straps so it won't be too much of a hinderance when you are moving about with it.

A few additional do's and don't:

DONT. put your hand across the two main terminals when you crank the ringer, you will get a nice 84V electric shock!

DO. Remember to press the Push to Talk when you want to talk. But, unlike a walkie-talkie, you DONT have to release it for the other end to talk, its a Full Duplex system so just keep it pressed for the duration of the conversion.

I'm less worried about carrying the phone unit than the 20kg cable reels :)

Warning re electric shocks duly noted, I think some of the British signallers at Hauptmann Horn had a similar surprise. Is it fairly obviously which of the two cable ends are which? I don't want to be wiring it up the wrong way around.

Will you be wanting us to act as FOs as well? ie do I need find a pair of binoculars? I can always stick a scope on my G43 instead.

Cheers

Don't mistake me for a steely eyed veteran, I've never used a field phone in my life!

Good to have you onboard, but we might regret this. What was it they said about never volunteering for anything...

Heh, don't worry we won't be using cable reel backpacks, the phone cables will already be run out the the prepared positions, you will just need to hook up the phone and establish comms. You won't be alone in your position but if you are in one of the OP's then yes you will acting as FO's reporting back sit-reps to the CO in the HQ bunker. He will be depending on the intel you provide to make tactical. decisions.

With the wires, well it's 50/50 which will be which so that will be for you to figure out  It won't do any harm if they are the wrong way around, it just won't work!
