Before I lunge into a kit guide for the unit there are several piccies around that I shall post up for those intereted. As can be seen they are entirely British equiped
Well I like the sound of it. Dobrze!
OK, shortly a potted history of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division will be along, but to start with the differences from British Battledress and equipment is.... Wait for it.
Nothing. Literally.
Due to the desire to keep the build up of troops unknown to the Germans the Polish II Corps arrived at the Gustav line with all battle insignia removed. Every primary source I can find of them during, and just after, the fighting also shows them with completely unmarked Battledress jackets and helmets. So it is totally legitimate, and in fact more accurate, to portray them in standard unmarked battledress.
The equipment was standard Battledress (actually 40 pattern) and photo's show the usual Italian theatre mix of shirt sleaves, jumpers and such. Webbing is shown as standard unblancoed 37 patt webbing and MkII (? the standard one that doesn't look like a turtle) helmet.
The soft hat is the GS cap worn generally in the Polish style (pulled back rather than to the side) with a cloth Polish eagle on the front.
So the only difference from the standard uniform is the badge on the GS cap, and the style of wearing it.
Which answers the question i was about to ask earlier today about what the correct soft hat and insig would be!
Nice one.

That was one thing I didn't know, until I found a pic that a nice photographer happened to have taken of Polish infantry resting in the catacombs of the abbey after its capture.
I'm just tracking down a place to which I can point people for getting the Eagle badge for the GS cap. I'll let you all know when I find one.

Oh bugger, that means i've fianlly got to buy (and wear!) a craphat.
A cap comforter is equally valid as *everyone* carried one in their pack.

Can you post up a pic of the pulled-back 'Polish style' of wearing the GS cap for me to copy, cheers.

yup. I'll just have to borrow a mates scanner as my pics are in those terribly old fashioned book thingies.
(though not all Poles wore their caps like that, there are several examples of them being worn in the 'British style also).
Sounds good to me Craig, count me in for when we come around to it.

still haven't had access to my friend's scanner, but I have found a very nice selection of pictures in my post Crich research and preperation upheaval.
most are of armoured personnel, and as such a wearing berets, but I am reasonably sure that these are GS caps.

They are. There is no doubt.
