The Battle for Monte LaDifensa 2-8th December 1943

In September 1943 the Allies invaded the southern Italian mainland at Salerno. Strategic planners had believed that the Germans would then withdraw north, toward the Alps. But the Germans did not withdraw, and in what became known as the Battle of the Winter Line, the Allies began their long fight up the Italian peninsula .

In November 1943 General Mark Clark's U.S. 5th Army was readying an offensive on the mountains below Monte Cassino. The Germans had fortified the chain of heights northeast from Camino-Difensa halfway across Italy as an additional barrier to Allied forces attempting to break through to Rome. While the main defensive line, the Gustav Line, was formidable, the additional fortifications at Camino-Difenso (the "Winter Line") were intended as an additional delay.

The Winter line was fortified with gun pits, concrete bunkers, turreted machine-gun emplacements, barbed-wire and minefields. It was the strongest of the German defensive lines south of Rome. About 15 German divisions were employed in the defence.
Two corps were to attack the Camino hill mass overlooking the Mignano Gap; the British 10th Corps, to the left, was to attack Monte Camino and the U.S. 2nd Corps to seize adjoining heights on the northern half of the massif. Opposite them were troops of the 15th Panzergrenadier Division.

As the Allied troops move up to their start positions, the low rumble of German armour can be heard from the daunting massifs....
