Hello all! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been historical wargamer for several years now, mainly playing1/56 scale Bolt Action, and have finally decided to join airsoft. Originally I had planned to collect deactivated firearms but my friend mentioned the Sten mk2 AEG and I have since completely fallen in love with ww2 airsoft.

I have been reading the Paras kit thread in the British Uniform forum and have most of my kit which is based on info from that thread. I have my first airsoft game this Saturday at Billericay and am looking forward to purchasing my own sten before Christmas if I can get the games in.

I look forward to maybe seeing some of you on the field in the near future!

Regards,

Ralph

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Which armies do you collect? So far I have rounded off my 8th Army force which I must finish painting but I'm already eyeing up some Soviets for my next army.

Ralph

Hello and welcome,

following the kit guides is a sensible way to go and it is easy enough to morph airborne into normal infantry or whatever for more restrictive kit events.

Any questions, fire away.

Quite a few of us are wargamers too, although for WW2 I'm a 6mm, 15mm and 20mm guy.

Cheers
Martin

I'm seriously considering running a game of Bolt Action or something at Benevento next year on the Friday evening. Should have the camper van by then.

Welcome to the forum, mate. Any kit you don't have we'll most likely be able to sort you out. I can always loan you a Sten until you've got your own.

It's great to see so many Bolt Action players here. It looks like I'm in great company. As it happens Granger is the name of my heroic veteran First Lieutenant though his desert rats are slowly being outnumbered by the large amount of Red Devils I seem to keep buying.

With regards to the UKARA, do I need to play 3 games at the same site or can I split my games between 2? Colchester is much closer to me and they've just opened up a new site.

Regards,

Ralph

Three at the same, mate. For those of us who are only involved in WW2 airsoft and don't attend Open Day's, it can be an added hassle getting UKARA. Best bet is to just find a decent local site and bludgeon your way through three skirmishes. :good:

That's a shame. I'm sure I'll still have fun in my first game tomorrow. My friend has just got his German helmet and webbing sorted so there'll be at least 2 people in ww2 gear even if we will be using g36c's.

Ralph

Yes, it is the site that gives you the registration. If you play for an organiser with multiple sites (like Gunman or First and Only) you can play at different sites.

Once I have my UKARA and I buy a sten, can I then use the sten at any site?

Any outdoor site certainly. The only downside of the Sten is that it is full auto only. Most indoor sites tend to only allow single shot.
You can get around this by using a programmable mosfet such as a Burst Wizard. These are tiny circuit boards that plug in between the gun and the battery and can be used to set how many shots you fire with each trigger pull. If you use one, you will however use up your batteries very fast.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. For now I'll stick with Airsoft Billericay and try to get in some ww2 events once I have the sten. I had looked into the Lee Enfield but it seems the only good quality one is the SnS version and that's out of my budget... For now.

Getting ahead of myself here but is it wise to bring a couple of extra fully charged batteries to replace used batteries in combat? Or do the batteries on a sten last quite a while?

Ralph

I would. I've always taken spare batteries to events just to be on the safe side. The important thing to remember when you attend an event is you're basically in a wood somewhere, often a few hours from home. If something goes wrong with your gun it can seriously bugger your day.

My first two events with my own gun, something went wrong and I had to rely on the kindness of other people to get me through the day, as I didn't have a spare (both times at Fireball... which is probably why despite living about 130 miles away I'm a member there). You're lucky in that airsoft as a hobby (particularly WW2 airsoft) seems to attract kind hearted, enthusiastic people who will loan you a gun in a worse case scenario. That said, there are few things more demoralising in airsoft then having all your kit, travelling miles to a game, then getting there to find your gun's kaput. It's just added stress really, particularly when you're new.

Spare battery, spare mags and, eventually, spare gun... or two... or three... I'm not entirely convinced you can have too many in this hobby.

Basic rule is, as long as you're not a cock, people will always help you. :D

Thanks for the good advice. I'll definitely add some extra batteries to my shopping list. I've got five 110 cap magazines on the way already and am planning to get myself a browning hi power to use as a sidearm/secondary if the worst happens to my sten. For a spare gun I've already been looking at the SnS L42 but we'll see what the wife says ;-)

Ralph
