Hi Guys

Right I have got my basic kit together for a Heer impression and have booked up for The Battle of Minsk and Anarchy under the Eagle, also hoping my son can get time of work and attend Oddballs event. So much excitement simmering away!

My question is (and this may sound a bit daft :giggle: ) when travelling to events do you wear civvies and change on site or do you just wear the trousers and shirt while travelling. Presumably walking into a service station to take a leak decked out in nazi gear would be likelly to cause offence.

Thanks
Tim

ive been to many a service station, in SS uniform, and even in joseph porta regalia, and 95% of people dont even know what you are, they just think "army"

the few people who do recognise the S.S runes, or the black panzer tunic and deaths heads, tend to either look away, or stare, (to which a nice smile and a cheery "Guten tag" tends to make them look away.

as long as all your guns are in the boot out of sight, and youve not got a holster or bayonet on your belt, there not really much anyone can do about it.

a few years ago, just as me and tiny were geting out of the car in hilton park services near brum, in our 27th panzer uniforms, a car pulled allongside, and a family of orthadox jews got out right next to us, not one batted an eyelid, or looked funny, or said a word, they were oblivious to it.
as time passes, most people forget history.

then again , there can always be one gobshite, out of the blue, who sees a feldgrau uniform and says "NATZI" (word stolen from marsha  )

wear what you like, just keep weapons out of sight

i sometimes go to work in a mix of civvies, pea dot, oak a, or plaintree, and my black m43 panzer cap. "BUT DITCH THE BUDGIE SMUGGLERS", :D "No worries mate" :good:

Stick on a normal jacket/jumper and you'll just look like a fashion victim.

Unfortunately I always look like a fashion victim so no problem there :slap:

I have now got to the point of thinking what the hell.
When I drive my jeep to a car/re-enactment show now I wear the M1 helmet, if you don't have anything on your head and you hair isn't short then you will look like you have been in a tornado. I have tried jeep caps and baseball caps but nothing stays on like steel. No I don't plan on wearing the Oddball hat out in public just yet  saving that for Anarchy.

Also been into a few petrol station with it on

I sometimes do and sometimes don't. It's often nice to change out of a dirty uniform before heading back home and if you do that you may as well travel there in one.

As for the guns. Really you should have them in boxes/cases/etc and the batteries out, ammo stored separately. At least that's what I recommend. I generally also make sure the cases are out of sight as well. No idea if that's required by law, but it's a good plan. For instance consider if you have a breakdown and have to change to a different car, or whatever.

Yes, guns packed away. I often travel in most of my uniform, and bung a fleece on top when filling up with fuel or whatever. Just easier than mucking around getting changed when you get there, and helps them get that bit more lived in look.

Nine hours of driving is a really good way of getting puttees to conform to the curvature of your calf.

Cheers

kinda necroposting but generally without the helemts or peaked or armband SS, German or Nazi of any sort isnt that recongizable, unless its the parade stuff, and people who do see "nazi kit" and not just "army kit" would probbaly be re enactors or airsofters so wouldnt assume you were a nazi, the insgina is often small so people just walk staright past, and if they see, well portas way of dealing with that is good.
But on the way to any airsoft events i just waer the pants and a hoodie to cover the top,
after i once ran into a teacher who asked why i was wearing full desert camo at a service station at 7 in the morning

Tee hee :giggle:

No doubt, being a teacher, they were keen to hear your reasoning and only to ready to heap praise and affirmation on you for explaining yourself so well?

Most of you know, and for those of you who don't, I'm a teacher myself and frequently get ribbed at work by those who I'm friendly with [oo er missus] about being a Nazi, which of course I'm not, but I too am of a 'certain age' and am in agreement with Oddy and Porta on this one. Any event I've been to, I've always driven there in kit and stopped off at service stations as the need arises, or the fancy takes me. Same with all the regular 'modern day' skirmishing I do. I wouldn't dream of driving anywhere without it on

Most people don't bat an eyelid, or couldn't care less, or don't know what they're looking at.....whichever it is, chances are you'll be fine and won't get any grief. Turn up to the Stoneleigh militaria show in SS gear, however, and you'll be turned away, or if you manage to get in and they spot you later, told to take the insignia off, or cover it up, or leave! :happyclap: :happydance: :good:

Yes I got to thinking well I am in a jeep and maybe towing a 37mm gun behind me and have a 30cal on the mount and Thompson on the windscreen, so why the hell would I look out of place with my kit on :giggle:

It makes many a kid’s day to see it all so why not.
It can even be fun when cars slow down on the motorway to take a photo :happydance:

However without the jeep I would tame the look dawn a touch at the petrol stations maybe, but one thing about WW2 US gear is that 70 years later most of it still looks in fashion to walk down the street in. Other than the helmet maybe.

As for German gear take a tip from the movies if anyone asks tell them it is the new Salvation Army uniform most would be dumb enough to believe you.

Or is it Irish Salvation Army in Liverpool :slap:

You will be looking for sites with a canal now :giggle:

I also love the plumy accent "sorry I don't speak English" idea for when people ask you why you are in German uniform or try the line in German.

sorry, ich kann nicht Englisch sprechen

I always liked that bit of the movie when I was a kid.
