Hi folks.
I'm relatively new here, and I'm booked on to this event (thanks for having us) along with a friend of mine. We are both long term Airsofters who have been wanting to get into WWII for some time, so have been slowly collecting the kit and will hopefully not show ourselves up too much quality and attention to detail wise, but I have a question.
We are both from a re-enactment / Live Roleplay background and are used to pretty much full on, fully imersive events where you show up as a "character" and act and operate as much in character as possible.
So my question is really how much are your events themed skirmish vs how much are they really roleplay ?
Do we need to come up with characters, names, backgrounds and justifications for being there ? Or do we show up dressed appropriately and have a fight ? I'm hoping it's more the former, as personally I'd prefer the idea of roleplay / immersive experience vs just a skirmish wearing more itchy chothes than normal.
Well I have a story/background/character... But Meh, I always do. Don't think you have to, but don't think you're not allowed.
Wladek is right... some will some won't. If you want to do it then good for you. But don't be surprised if others don't, or let it slip from time to time.
As someone who has done proper live roleplay (systemless mostly), this ain't it. But a certain amount of character does help.
At the last event I helped run I was an intentionally annoying british officer... I even did a silly accent from time to time.
Normally, I try to get into the mindset of whatever side I'm playing for that particular event. For this one, I've got an actual character in my head (my Grandfather) to draw upon, both for kit references and the actual events, so I'm hoping to really get into it at this game, even more so than usual, if for nothing else, out of respect for my Grandad. Getting dressed up and having a blat doesn't come into it for me, that's what open days are for.
When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
Aye, the chaps above have said it all. Part of the characterisation comes from the scenario - in this case Brits are up sht creek and will have survive on their wits and the Germans are elated and all-conquering. Beyond that its up to you how far you develop your own character - at the very least it helps to think why you are there, what experiences you have been through and that above all that you want to survive!
And this is, in a big way, what CiA (and PBI come to that) games are all about - trying to capture a bit of the flavour of what it might just have been like 60 or 70 years ago. While some players like wearing WW2 kit because it looks cool and just want to shoot other players (not that there is anything wrong with that in itself, if that is how they enjoy their hobby) they won't get anything much out of one of our events. Its what is in your head that matters most!
Funnily enough while addressing people by their rank or even saluting goes down well in the role play aspect, talking in an American accent always seems rather . And Germans don't speak German (other than a few choice words) and German accents are most often used for humour so Jerry ends up speaking rather good Queen's English! Perhaps this is something to do with the British reserve? Somehow I always end up as some sort of Call of Duty/Medal of Honor character hurling mild abuse at the enemy - although in my mind I rather fancy something closer to Edward Fox or Richard Attenborough but possibly end up more like Sgt Wilson!
Er.. some Germans do speak German. Martin!
Nah, other than general abuse hurling there is no point if your comrades don't know what you are saying!
We haven't even done any drilling in German (well, we tried but that was a looong time ago).
Mind, I was speaking German down the telephone at Glocke and got no intelligible reply since it was a Yank at the other end!

More like L/Cpl Jones If you ask me.......
When we were a Kingdom it was run by a King
When we were an Empire it was run by an Empress
Now we're a country we're run by a..........
"I say, chaps, steady on now ............!"

Well I find that if you jump into the role with both feet then others will join in.
At Op Lightning I spent a lot of time shouting at the enemy in German and a few of my Kameraden joined in. Even if it's jut the odd "Achtung" or "Angreifen" it makes a difference.
Same with the theatrical deaths.
Both of those things add to my personal enjoyment of a game, which is after all what I've paid me money for
When Chommers was using our 'callsign' in the tunnels to tempt unsuspecting Germans towards him (I dread to think what he was going to do to them) I was shouting "Er ist nicht deutsch!! Er is englisch!!" but no-one understood me.....

I did, but then i was stood behind you.
So did I but I was too busy peeing on the floor to take much notice.

I'm telling Andy!
I try to get in character and using my schoolboy German have been trying to learn a few choice words and phrases that could be useful. Things like orders, directions, insults & exclamations and even odd converstional pieces for those moments when you know the enemy is listening but don't want to let them know that you know. The trouble is I either forget or feel too self concious if no one else is doing it.
At Die Glocke I forgot the password in the afternoon and had to resort to shouting the likes of 'nicht schiessen, kameraden! Ich bin deutscher' etc at one point to avoid being shot at by my own side. Didn't work though. Maybe us German players need a training day to actually learn some German.
I know the perfect tutor!
If you can you get this 'tutor' to dress up like a teacher I'm sure there would be plenty of takers for the training. Might even get Chommers there if she has a cane.
Oi! Wotchit you!
Saving that one for yourself are you?
