Men of the 183rd Volksgrenadier Division, 4th November 1944

My name is Oberleutnant Wolfgang Lang. I am your new commander. I am addressing you as we have received orders to move our division into the front line. As you understand I cannot tell you where we will be going but we will be defending our Vaterland.
You have been trained the last couple of month in the beautiful surroundings of the Austria mountains and I know you are now eager to fight.
I know that veterans of the old 183rd Infantry Division have done a good job training our new members coming from the Luftwaffe and the Marine as well as the fresh new recruits.

It is now time to organise the unit.
I am asking for:
a) volunteers for the MG team (gunner and assistant)
b) volunteer for the unit’s medic position

My well trusted veterans Feldwebel Turner and Unteroffizier Buckley will be Gruppenfuehrer with the following Gruppen members:
Feldwebel Turner
- Grenadier Maynard
- Grenadier Vince
- Grenadier Byrne
- Grefreiter Rhodes (Sanitater)

Unteroffizier Buckley
- Grenadier Wright
- Grenadier Crowley
- Grenadier Munro-Dods
- Grenadier Jewer

I am expecting you to do your duty and make me proud.
I will see at the front in a couple of days.

Men of the 183rd Volksgrenadier Division, 9th November 1944

I am now able to inform you that we will be deployed against US and British units. We will be manning prepared bunker positions and trenches. A build-up of enemy forces has been reported and we expect an offensive in the next few weeks. Therefore we will dig in further, so prepare for entrenching activities. As our boot camp training officers always said: “Sweat saves blood.”

Constant air attacks have disrupted our supply lines. The promised new machine guns will not arrive. Therefore there is no need for volunteers for a MG gun crew at present. We hope to be able to get some support weapons from the unit we relief in the next days.

Do not be disheartened, we are well prepared and will stop the enemy to enter the Vaterland any further.
The Victory will be ours.
