Okay, so after a few weeks checking out prices i'm ready to order kit so i have to ask, what is the bare minimium to get started?

I'm looking at beret, BD, Denison and Webbing but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to afford ammo boots and other niceties to begin with. I'm also concerned that i'm not going to be able to find a long enough webbing belt (48") at places like sabre.

Also, does anybody have any advice for making the JG Bar 10 look more "in period" without having to do things like full wooden body changes?

I was thinking about removing the body, spraying a light "wooden" brown and then applying lines to the body using an old panting brush to get individual bristle lines of a darker colour over it before varnishing the whole thing.

This is similiar to the process i've used on larp weapons in the past but it does tend to leave slightly raised lines on the surface. can anybody suggest any better way to do this other than "cover with a sand bag"?

Also, what do people use for sidearms? I've not seen a airsoft webley in my round so i'm guessing most people stick to the 1911?

two small belts, joined with a third belt will cover that problem mate.
the rifle you can cover with a wood effect plastic kind of sheeting ( cant remember its name) but i think they sell it at b+q and the like. mean dog covered the green plastic on his M14 with it.
pistol,,,, mostly 1911, but you can have a captured p38 or luger. gadge has a .38 revolver.

Sounds about right. What boots do you have already?
Remember you don't need a BD jacket to start off with (or even anything other than brown trousers). The denison will cover it anyway.
Yes, you may have to go elsewhere to get a 48" belt. But do ask Sabre. WPG do some extra long belts and SoF may do as well.

Also, does anybody have any advice for making the JG Bar 10 look more "in period" without having to do things like full wooden body changes?

Certainly that will help, but the main issue will be the barrel. All military rifles of time had wood covering the barrel. Even the simplest fake barrel wood effect will help it look like an No4! Having a length of uncovered barrel is what really stands out for me as looking wrong.

Also, what do people use for sidearms? I've not seen a airsoft webley in my round so i'm guessing most people stick to the 1911?

Correct. There is no airsoft Webley or Enfield revolver. Get yourself a 1911A1. The TM version seems a good one. It's what I have.

It's more like a wartime S&W, which is what it almost is.

Yup, don't know guns. Makes you want to start saying 'bah sucks to you fritzy' though, not that I have had chance to use it in a game yet, far to conservative with my SMG ammo.

Hm.. swagger stick is do-able, i think i have a stick or three laying around somewhere.

Re the M14, is that wood laminate on the body? also, where did they get the upper cover for the M1 look from?

I do have one more question, Does anybody have ideas on the size of the screw case that held the detonator on a Gammon bomb?

*pouts* hutterfutterrutterrickrasterly

I suppose i can live without a swagger stick :D

I do need to get outfit sorted though. I am intrigued by the laminate though, although i am a bit dubious about how it will hold up to constant bashes and scratches that skirmishing brings. Apparently the Bar-10 has a rubberised stock, would this stuff actualy adhere to it?

You could take it off? The stock end probably wants to be brass anyway... :)

Id have to say that i think you'd find a M14 or M1a1 more versatile for wwii skirmishing.

If you're set on the bolt action route why not go for the mp001 which already comes in a wood effect?

Captured mp40 also perfectly acceptable.

its quite tough, it is plastic after all, but its not bank breaking expensive so if it does get trashed, just buy some more.

at bulge 2, both ranj and i used captured mp 40's, it look perfectly fine( in the vid for autumn mist , you can just see ranj in full south staffs giving it loads with an mp40.about 40-43 seconds in)

True, but for some reason i have my heart set on a bolt-action rifle :)

I've had a look at M14 Socom but or some reason the wooden version of this appears to be incredibly hard to find. Also, i'm not sure of my ability to shorted the Magazines on the M14 to allow it to look even vaguely in period.

As to why the Bar-10 over the Mp001. I've had mixed reports of the Mp001, problems with the cylinder needing airproofing, a low quality barrel (leading to poor acuracy) and feed problems from the magazine as well as issues of the magazine siezing in the magwell and being a bugger to release.

With this in mind i've had several people suggest the Bar-10 as JG have a good reputation and overall it will be easier to make a more effective rifle (more accurate, higher fps) and it serves as a good platform to modify to an Mk 4 SMLE latter on.

As to the MP40, i though production on this had stopped in addition to the CYMA Thompson?

I just think you're better off getting a period gun than a 'counts as' if youre buying anyway.

The counts as list is really if you already have it to save you buying a new shooter.

Either is good for us though, do whatever you are happy with, i just dont think you're going to make a black stocked modern rifle look very period without a lot of work.

Don't forget you don't have to rely on retailers. If you watch the forums 2nd hand guns do appear quite frequently.
