Comrades, Here's a Reproduction SN 42 Plate that I have received recently...

I made up the padding and cut the straps to length and finished the piece, a Film Prop Armorer made the copies of the Plates from a Ground Dug example a Comrade of mine had bought from Mother Russia... several sets are now on the UK Re-enactment Circuit with the Glorious 2nd Guards...

Enjoy...

photo of my repro, it's based on various originals (price 5500 Kč; about 190 GBP)
here you can see straps- one is from side to side and two others are crossed from top to this one

Detail of hooks on straps

Detail of attachment of dampening cloth (its like upper part of cloth through plate)

Now our unit is making on sn-38 and first piece is almost done, only one problem is kind of straps and dampening cloth, before we havent any photo of it

i saw a young soldier killed in NI simply becouse a round went in his waist but couldnt get back out again,,,,,,,, it just kept bouncing around inside his vest till it ran out of steam,,,,, he was litteraly riddled from the inside. very sobering .

Was he military police scaley ? and was it in 1991?

if so i was there, he was an R.M.P guy on a checkpoint next to ours was showing a kid his rifle , he popped off a shot by accident, i went in his mates side, hit the balistic plate in his back from the inside , then bounced back through his body , and so on and so on.

it was a right fecking state, kids screaming, every squaddie about to crack of rounds and just looking for targets, and the poor twat who Negligently discharged looking down in shock as his mate lay there :(

but ive also shot my own body armour when i went home on leave, i was curious if it worked, i took it to the gun club and hit it with samson israili ammo (very good stuff) with 9mm from tinys glock 17, .45 acp 230 grain from my glock 21, i also gave it a good going over with .22 long from an m1 carbine in .22L, and some .357 magnum from my browning barracuda

all it stoped was the .22, ALL the rest went through the front, and stopped inside the back EXCEPT the .357 magnum, that went in and out no problem

so would it stop a rifle round, not at all

when i handed it in when i left , it cost me a crate of beer, so i didnt recive a "bill" for the armour, and a "only gregory could do this " statement LOL

as for the new osprey stuff, ive no idea, and no guns to test it any more LOL

Plate armour was worn in the first wwi too, its useful against shell fragments and sub velocity debris.

You just have to weigh up the pros and cons of mobility vs protection.

Modern body armour (rarley) stops rifle round sit just holds you together better until you reach a casualry clearing station.

The new osprey body armor stops rifle rounds.

Yeah mate you keep believing that.... :)

The ceramic plate will, unfortunatley the rest of it wont, and as said the blunt trauma if it does will be massive...

Body armour minimises damge its not bullet proof.

Heres the science bit:

65+ per cent of battle casualties come from 'sub velocity fragments' thats bits of bomb casing, paving stones, house bricks and fenceposts thrown up my a blast... two foot of picket fence going at 30 miles an hour will ripa hole in you as well as any bullet.

Body amrour stops that, as does the helmet.

Now being wrapped in a big kevlar body warmer does mean that wehn a round goes in with an entry wound lie a five pence it doens go out with an exit wound like a cd... at least it keeps the bits that would have sprayed across the field on you and in contact.

Yor best bet is to paint a bullseye on the plate carrier....

having worn CBA i woudl not trust it to stop 7.62... i sincerley doubt Osprey woudl either but i'm very happpy to be proved wrong.

I've seen the plate in osprey take the hit from rifle rounds, a 50cal round cracked it, also saw one in Iraq stop a sharp plate of rocket case when it hit a navy lad in the back, shame my Rover was wrote off by it
