What a day that was...
No sooner had we set up camp then our CO (some Limey who had been put in charge of us) sent us off to get some intelligence, unfortunately we got split up and came across some krauts who mowed down one section mercilessly, The rest tried to get to the poor soldiers lying there calling for medics but couldn't as the Germans had the area well covered. We had to leave the two to die there...
Upon us returning to our base the CO told we had access to three jeeps with machine guns so we tried again only this time with some nice support weapons, a few fire fights later and the necessary info was ours.
Following this our boss told us we need to go and scout a German base to our north, rumoured to have minefields we were to go, see, record and return with our info. My god it was a well organised base, minefields, MG42 dug in a sand bunker an pill box the lot. We were lucky to get back from that unscathed. We reported our findings to our CO who didn't seem surprised it was so well setup and he said we should have a break before we prepare to attack it.
Then all hell broke lose.
Smoke to our North, mortars and artillery to our south the Germans attacking from everywhere it seemed. A runner was sent to some airbourne nearby while we tried to defend - those caught outside were shot quickly while those in their foxholes put up a brave fight as the germans just came and came - smoke, grenades they threw everything at us. We were wiped out without seeing the paras. Our counter attacks were hampered by a lack of ammunition but in the end weight of numbers meant the germans retreated so we could regain our base, ammo and much needed supplies.
Due to shortage of supplies we were sent to get some from base Charlie and this mission turned out to be 100% successful, a short skirmish with a german patrol enroute meant we shot one or two without loss to ourselves and we returned happy and jubilant, only to be informed we were now going to attack that base we had seen earlier. Not only that but full frontal while our allies tried to flank them. Never have I been so scared as facing two dug in mg42's and being asked to attack through their firezone. Our demise as a fighting unit was imminent in our view.
Luckily we had lots of artillery support and although the going was tough with many dead and dying we managed to wrought them after some intense fighting.
We then chased the krauts all the way back to some trench system where (yet again) they formed a defensive line that was all but impenetrable - it took all of us and our allies, with smoke, grenades and fires aplenty, a long hard slog to get them to finally capitulate. Those germans sure know how to fight.
The fighting had been intense all day long which made the evening sitting with our allies and former enemies all the more rewarding...
To the organisers I say thankyou.
To TIM
nice touch
I say
An excellent interpretation of the day.
you could have just said. What ever we tried to do & what we succeeded in doing we got a bloody good spanking from start to finish.
But it's not about who wins it's about the fun & that it was.
Still a excellent report though.
See ya
Peter
