I usually use steradent in my canteens to clean them out.
Though I suspect the metal taste will go in time, or you'll get used to it.
You could try putting something other than plain water to drink in it. Lucozade, coke, etc?
if your lucky enough to work in catering and have a decarboniser for grill plates throw it in there for a hour or so. that gets rid of all the nasty bits inside and makes it shiney at the same time
Give it a good clean and then you just get use to the metallic taste. It's metal.
put a plastic sandwich bag inside it and fill the bag with water, roll the bag over the top and secure with an elastic band,trim off excess bag .barely shows and a new bag can be used each time you use it.

Drying them out on a radiator seems to help,not plastic ones though.
Have you got a steel or aluminium one?
My steel one doesn't taste of anything after I sterilised it. I wouldn't dare drink from the aluminium one, it looks like a guano filled cave in there...
caustic soda will clean out an aluminium one no matter how bad but don't leave it in there too long as it will eat through it , oh and keep it off you'r hands as it will eat them too.

Good point. Although if you go for something like Typhus, that works for multiple periods and not just WWII.
