Were these worn on the M41 and M43 jackets at all times or were they optional because I have seen alot of photos both with and without them?

They tended not to be worn in the field after a while, mainly on dress. Chevrons were a great advert to snipers as to who was in command; although PFCs wouldn't be the main targets!

ive seen them drawn onto M41s with pen.

Ahhh makes sence, like HS says, you wouldn't want to draw attention to yourself if you had more cheverons than the guy stood next to you
