I've got a pair each of roughouts & buckle boots, the buckle boots have had some polish applied but not to the flap, and the roughouts are untouched.
So I was wondering what is the best stuff to use on them, is ordinary polish ok and if so what's the best colour?
And should the flap on the buckle boots be polished, I would have presumed so, but I did get them from a re-enactor so I'm not sure if they should be like that.
Dubbin will do the job on both Pete - grease 'em up!
I imagine anything and everything was used in the field to keep them waterproof - be it polish, dubbin or axle grease (not that that is a recommendation!)
Its pretty similar to the German low boots really - viewtopic.php?f=45&t=5403&start=0. (ignore the blackening though). The more dubbin, the deeper the colour, the more waterproof they get.
With repeated treatments over time the 'rough' of the rough-out becomes very smooth.
