Okay. Wool shirts, '37 trousers and me just don't mix
I'm going out to enjoy myself, not be itched to death. The trousers are fine, a pair of HBTs look okay and can always be chucked in the washing machine. Wool shirts, not so much. It appears that I have two choices, a wool shirt with suitably light long-sleeve t-shirt underneath. A long sleeve cotton t-shirt plus a wool shirt strikes me as being kinda warm; would a long-sleeve tactical heatgear be completely unacceptable? Or, does anyone know of a suitable cotton(ish) shirt that looks like the real McCoy from six feet away?
Or should I just man the f*ck up?

on ebay go for a granddad shirt, basically a khaki collarless cotton shirt will do ,its what i use not because of the itchiness but as its cooler.that or try shaving the inside of the wool shirt, its an old trick but it weakens the materiel a bit.

Wool shirts can be made comfy by washing with shampoo instead of detergent and hair conditioner instead of fabric conditioner. If you can't wear wool at all then a pair of denims with modern stuff underneath is fine as long as it can't be seen.
Icebreaker make a very good set of lightweight thermals. They are made of pure merino wool which feels like elasticated cotton. Not itchy at all
Collarless? Denims? Limey nonsense? Is this the British sub-forum? I think not!
I have a repro M1937 "wool" shirt from "Hong Kong Keith" on Ebay which seems to be a lot softer / less itchy than others (i.e. not itchy at all) which may not contain much wool at all but I am not sure if he is still trading.
I have an OD linen shirt which I used to wear for games as it looked okay under a jacket (no pockets) and some people use oficcers' cotton shirts for games

Just use a layer of thermo underwear. You have two variants of that stuff: one that keeps you cool for the summer and the more known stuff that keeps you warm in winter.
Okay, I caved. Wools are ordered.
M1941 shirt, M1937 trousers and a belt. And a jeep cap. And a poplin shirt just in case.
Now for a WW2 helmet - an M1. Fixed bale or the other one?
I actually recently got a rear weld post war one but I'm less than impressed - needs a bit of work which I don't have time for at the moment. Might get around to fixing it up eventually but really need one that looks the part out of the box as it were.

US wool isn't actually that itchy. Not compared with British stuff anyway.
The trousers are very nice in fact, basically the same as British officer quality stuff!
As for the wool shirts, those can be a little itchy, but there was a private purchase (aka PX) cotton khaki shirt that is completely authentic. I think WPG sell repros of them as may some other places.
Well, the stuff arrived today.
The trousers seem pretty huge! Unfortunately they fit Although they're pretty roomy in the legs and are still a tad long - damn those guys must have been tall.
The wool shirt is very nice - and itchy - and tent like. However, once tucked into my trousers it's seems fine. Still a bit loose but I need it across the shoulders. It doesn't have epaulettes so I think it would actually look pretty cool as a casual shirt. The cotton shirt is pretty decent as well and fits pretty well although it's a different cut from the wool one - dare I say more European than current American. The belt I got is a bit tinny but still looks the part and although I ordered a 38" waist it's a bit long - I've obviously lost weight...
The only disappointment is the jeep cap. I ordered a medium. It's far too small. My head is obviously as big as my peers have implied - who knew?
Other than what was advertised as an original 1911 magazine pouch all the items are labelled as made in Pakistan but they seem pretty decent and attention to detail seems very good although, other than illustrations, I've nothing to compare them to.

If it's WPG, I got one of their belts recently and the buckle seems to be a copy of a later ecnomy pattern, stamped from pot metal. It is not very nice but it is correct. In most pics the metal tip of the belt sits just past the first belt loop - you can trim the cut end to make it fit better if you want.
Loose in the leg is totally correct, the trousers were styled in the 30s in an attempt to make a more fashionable uniform and they are meant to be worn in the field, so that is how they were meant to be. You can get them taken up at a tailor for a few quid but when you measure them for alteration remember that they are meant to sit quite high on the waist compared to current fashions. Personally I think they are much more flattering for us more (ahem) well built gentlemen than the ubiquitous slim fit hipsters which seem to be all you can get on the high street these days.
If made form real wool, jeep caps do tend to stretch and get sloppy over time so don't worry if it's a bit tight new.
